Toronto – Veteran Ethiopian diplomat Ambassador Konjit Sinegiorgis passed away. She has been receiving medical treatment for an unspecified condition according to a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia.
She is one of the longest serving female diplomats in the history of Ethiopian diplomacy, notably the second female diplomat after Ambassador Yodit Imru.
Konjit joined the Ethiopian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the 1960s at a young age, according to information from the Ministry. The start of her diplomatic career predates the formation of the Organization of African Unity (OAU), now the AU.
She has served as Ethiopia’s Ambassador to Canada, Egypt, Israel , Austria and Mexico (non-resident). Also, she has served in multilateral institutions including the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) and the African Union where she served as Ethiopia’s permanent representative.
In a message of condolence which is published on the African Union Website, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, described Ambassador Konjit as “a distinguished diplomat, a pioneering figure in Ethiopia’s foreign service, and a steadfast Pan-Africanist who dedicated her life to the service of her country and the continent.”
During a farewell organized for her at the AU in 2015, she was quoted as saying ““My career has been my life and I sacrificed everything for it… there is no greater honor than serving one’s country to the fullest!.”
Furthermore, she has served as a Special Advisor in the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) and led the South Sudan peace process.
According to information from the Ministry, she studies international relations from London University College and graduated in 1961. She is also a recipient of the Carnegie Fellowship at Columbia University New York in 1963.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia has not disclosed information about funeral arrangements.
Konjit was born in 1940 in Harar, South East Ethiopia.

I have been saying all along about our glorious women. They excel the men when given the responsibility and the chance in every field of profession. They were other women preceding her in the diplomatic field with that fire-spitting Barentu-Amhara concoction Taytu. I hope this accomplished diplomat will motivate millions other women to unite and peacefully grab away the mantle of ruling that gem of the colored from us men at least for the next 100 years. We the men should go back, way back in line and stay there at least for the next 100 years. We have been making one mess after another for centuries now. Enough is enough with that. We hatched conflicts and waged destructive and deadly wars for all kinds of stupid reasons sending the sons and daughters of our women to awaiting infernos. Look at what just happened in the war in Tigray. Men sparked the deadly prairie fire that killed more than 500,000 citizens leaving behind towns and villages in utter shambles. It was all for some stupid reasons. Do you think we men learn from that? No! We are now busy waging wars in the two largest regions of Amhara and Oromia. Debre and his hooligans are itching to go back to their rabbit holes just to send the youth of that region to its certain death once again. Remember these thugs have their kids stashed away at safe places overseas.
