Toronto – Oromia regional authorities have been liking the massacre of Orthodox Christians in East Arsi to the militant Oromo Nationalist Group which calls itself Oromo Liberation Army.
However, the group released a statement on Monday pointing to Abiy Ahmed’s administration. It said his administration has been exploiting “fault lines” in the country to maintain a hold in power.
“And in these past days, his mercenaries have been moving through Arsi in Oromia, murdering innocent Orthodox Christians— to fracture any attempt at collective resolve against his rule by igniting inter-religious and inter-ethnic conflict…, ” it said linking the massacre in Arsi with government forces.
The group itself has been, however, linked to many massacres against ethnic Amahra farming communities in the region and ransom kidnapping.
Over 34 Ethiopian Orthodox Christians were massacred in the Sherka zone of the Arsi region in a span of three days this week. Over the past few weeks, as many as 154 Christians were massacred.
The Holy Synod of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church and Ethiopian Islamic Affairs Supreme Council have released a statement condemning the latest attack, and calling for the government to discharge its responsibility to defend citizens.
