Gambella Region Introduces Curfew as Security Challenges Continue

Borkena

Toronto – Gambella Regional State of Ethiopia on Wednesday introduced a curfew as the region continues to experience a security crisis.

In a statement the region shared on social media it said curfew is imposed between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. local time. No one is allowed to move during this time except authorized security officials.

It is in effect as of Wednesday in all the areas, including Gambella city, where  there had been a security problem.  No timeline is provided as to when it is ending.

A few days ago the region introduced restriction of vehicle movement  after 7 p.m. local time. It also announced that no person is allowed to carry a gun except authorized security officials.

On Saturday residents said, as reported by borkena,  that more than 100 people were killed during the latest round of fighting in Gambella city and rural area.

Service delivery was disrupted as government offices and banks were closed following the security incident.

Intag and Abol districts as well as Gambella city, seat of the regional government, were affected by the violence after Gambella’s police chief, Umod Ujulu was killed.

The regional government requested the deployment of a federal police force and the Ethiopian defense force. These forces were deployed on Monday and service delivery resumed since then.

Security forces have been making arrests in connection with the security situation. Those arrested were allegedly involved in the conflict. However, the number of suspects arrested so far is unspecified.

There had been a recurring conflict – with ethnic character between Nuer and Anuak – in the region.

The region is home to hundreds of thousands of refugees from South Sudan.

  1. This is what I have been saying. Bigots are everywhere. In some areas they have been in the open and wreaking havoc in Tigray, Amhara and Oromo regions, In other areas they have been waiting foe the opportune time. They are now killing and pillaging in Gambela. These are more than bigots. They are misogynists thinking they can outdo a woman president. They think she is not qualified for the job because she is a woman. But they may be nudging, poking and irritating a calm lioness before they awaken the Taytu in our daughter/sister. You watch those misogynistic bigots running in all directions for cover!!!
