Toronto – The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia on Tuesday announced that Geidon Timoteos, the Minister, met with Sergey Lavrov, Foreign Minister of the Russian Federation in Moscow.

The ministry did not disclose much as to what agenda items were discussed during the meeting except saying that the discussion was on  “deepening the longstanding and strategic partnership between the two countries. They also exchanged views on regional and international issues of common concern.”

However, coverage from Sputnik Africa suggests that Gedion has briefed  Mr. Lavrov on national and regional developments.

In a speech during a press conference, he highlighted a range of recent projects including the completion of GERD and the export of electric power, efforts in the areas of industrialization, steps Ethiopia is taking in its role in the region.

Apparently, Ethiopia has been seeking Russian support to enhance Defense capability. Story that Ethiopia has placed an order to purchase six fighter jets from Russia was making headlines after Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s latest trip to Moscow where he met with President Vladimir Putin whom he asked to visit Ethiopia.

Notably, an agreement was also signed with Rosatom to develop nuclear energy in Ethiopia. Last week, the Prime Minister named  Sandokan Debebe, chief of staff at the PM office,  commissioner for the Nuclear commission.

Russia and Ethiopia have well over 120 years of diplomatic relations. Russia has reportedly initiated support to enhance Ethiopia’s defense capabilities.

Mr Lavrov remarked during the meeting.  He is quoted as saying  “Africa’s aspiration is to address its challenges independently and formulate its policies freely. Russia and China are known for supporting and implementing such policies. From this standpoint, the issue of formulating policies independently often faces interruptions due to external interference. Russia’s support is vital to prevent this.”
