Toronto – The Ethiopian Human Rights Council is calling for parties to the conflict in the Amhara region to unconditional ceasefire.
In a statement it released on Friday on current affairs affecting human rights, the council said extensive attacks on civilians still occur in the Amhara region of Ethiopia. It also called for the parties to resolve their differences durably through dialogue after a ceasefire.
The recommended actions could help avert further killings of civilians and destruction in the region, it was noted.
With the broadening scope of the conflict between the Ethiopian government forces and Fano forces, the statement said, human rights violations are occurring in the region.
The statement made a reference to a recent drone strike in Sanka where a health center was targeted. A pregnant woman and three other patients were killed in the attack, it was said. Also health professionals serving in the health center were wounded. Ethiopian Human Rights indicated that it has confirmed the incident.
The rights group also made a reference to an attack gunmen carried out in Mekane Selam (South Wollo) and West Gondar zone. It said 10 civilians were killed.
“Warring parties should refrain from attacking civilians and respect the International Human Rights Convention while operating,” EHRC added.
EHRCO also called for the Federal Government to discharge its responsibility in protecting citizens’ right to live and their security.
It has been well over two years since the Federal government started a military operation in the Amhara region of Ethiopia.
Reputable human rights organizations, including Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch, have been reporting extensive human rights abuse in the region in connection with the ongoing conflict.
From several reports since the start of the conflict, there have been curring drone strikes aganist civilians, extrajudicial kilings and rape in the region.
