Ethiopia has signed a nuclear Energy Development Agreement with Russia

Toronto – Ethiopia’s pursuit of nuclear energy development for an “inclusive development purpose” appears to be taking shape.
This week, Ethiopia and Russia have signed an agreement on a nuclear energy development project. What was signed was, based on what Ethiopia Electric Power shared on its social media page, an actionable programme of the project.
Russian State Atomic Energy Corporation (Rosatom) and Ethiopian Electric Power (EEP) signed the agreement in Moscow in the presence of Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Ashebir Balcha, CEO of Ethiopian Electric Power, and Alexey Likhachev, Director of Rosatom signed the agreement. But the exchange of the document was between Ethiopia’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Gedion Timotheos, and Alexey Likhachev.
The agreement to build a nuclear facility was reached in 2018 when Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov visited Ethiopia.
Ethiopia aspires to diversify energy sources, ensure a long term nuclear energy development and enhance the country’s capacity in terms of energy supply as it aspires to see the transformation of the manufacturing sector.
During the inaugural ceremony of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed disclosed that Ethiopia will start a nuclear energy project for peaceful purpose only the generating capacity of which is as large as GERD project itself.
The cost of building the facility and the timeline for completing it is undisclosed. But it is clear that Russia will be behind the construction of this project.
Russia and Ethiopia have well over a century old diplomatic relation and it seems to be getting momentum. During his meeting with Abiy Ahmed in Moscow, President Vladimir Putin this week remarked “our relations are gaining momentum across all areas, and we are very pleased that things are going that way…”
