Toronto – The Ministry of Education has announced result of the 2017 Ethiopian academic year grade 12 exam result. Only 8.4 percent of the students who wrote the exam got a passing score of 50 percent or more. Over 500,000 students wrote the exam. To be exact, the number of students who wrote the exam was 585,882, according to the ministry.
The exams are graded out of 600.
The Minister for education sees improvement compared to last year. He also added it might take up to two more years to see a 15-20 percent passing rate.
The highest score this year is 591 and was recorded in the Natural science stream. The scorer is identified to be a Dodola Iffa Boru School in Oromia region. The highest score from female students is 579 from Besrate Gebreil school in Addis Ababa.
The highest score in the social science stream is 562 (a male student from Ambo Boarding School in Oromia region). For females, the highest score in the stream is 548 for females – a student from St. Joseph school in Addis Ababa.
The total number of students who scored over 500 are reported to be 2,384. The ministry said the number for last year was 1,221.
Boarding schools have scored better. Their average score is 71 percent. The number for public schools is 30.6 percent.
Regular private schools average 51 percent.
“The number of passing students without any form of cheating is increasing highly…when student competence increases the quality of education in our universities will improve…,” DW Amharic quoted Dr Berhanu, the Minister for Education, as saying.
The ministry also said that teachers training offered over the past two years and classes offered digitally in addition to classrooms have contributed to the “improvement” of results.
1249 schools from across the country did not even get a single student who scored the passing mark for university entrance. Last year, the number was 1,363. On the other hand, there were 50 schools whose entire students passed the exam.
The Ministry has also shared some statistical data regarding the composition of students who wrote the exam during the 2017 Ethiopian academic calendar.
The number of students in the natural science stream was 297,528. The number for social science was 288,352.
In terms of geographical distribution of the score for this year, Addis Ababa is the leader with 28.9 percent, Harari with 21 percent and Amhara region 12 percent. Notably, schools were closed in most parts of the region in connection with the ongoing conflict between fano and government forces.

This now rehabbed patriot has inherited a messy education system and a huge country like Ethiopia it won’t be a walk in a park to bring it up to snuff. But there is another big achievement where more than 95% of 8th graders in the capital have passed the national exam. The education system in that country has been in disarray since 1974. It will take decades to put it back on its corrected moving tracks.
