Toronto – More than two years after the end of the bloody conflict the situation in Tigray is concerning in a number of ways without even taking into consideration the possibility of another round of conflict.
This week, BBC Amharic reported that a seven year old boy was abducted and killed. His body littered. He was killed after his parents paid 600,000 birr for ransom. Something like this was unimaginable when the TPLF was in control of the Federal government.
The mess is worsening on the political level too. This week, reports emerged that what is left of the TPLF is facing resistance from within.
Notably, one of the major strengths of the TPLF faction under Debretsion Gebremicahel is the support it has been getting from the army. But that support base is starting to be shaking.
Army 15 is one of the major forces and is based in the Adigrat area of Tigray – not very far from the border to Eritrea. This same unit reportedly held a meeting in which it evaluated the situation in the region.
The army which is under the command of General Geush Gebre (Fenkel) pointing fingers at the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) and General Tadesse Worede’s Interim Administration.
It seems that Army 15 tends to think that there is an activity in the region that could potentially bring about another conflict to the region.
Based on reports from the region. General Gush’s force explicitly opposed the Debretsion Gebremichael led TPLF relation with Eritrea. The army called it “illegal” and not one that will benefit the Tigray region.
This army also blamed Tadesse Worede’s administration for failure to “recover Tigray territories and bring about stability.” Furthermore, his administration is seen as one that is lacking neutrality due to alleged links to the Debretsion led group. At least two opposition parties operating in the region have been accusing Tadesse Worede on similar grounds.
The way the interim administration made changes to the South and South East Tigray administration is also something that angered Army 15. According to sources, tension was building up in Adigrat after Army 15 announced its stance.
Before the General Guesh force, another armed group – which later called itself as Tigray Peace Force (TPF)- crossed over to the neighboring Afar region of Ethiopia and started organizing armed resistance to the TPLF. Like Army 15, TPF alleges that the TPLF is leading the Tigray region to another conflict and that it must be stopped. This group opposes TPLF’s new relation with Eritrea.
