Toronto – The Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) on Saturday released a statement in response to Ethiopian PM Abiy Ahmed.
“There is no interest in or preparation for war,” The TPLF said. When PM Abiy appeared at the Ethiopian Parliament earlier this week.
He called on religious leaders and diplomats to do everything they can to avert war and approach the TPLF leaders to that effect. “Once it is started, it is difficult to stop,” Abiy Ahmed said. He also stated that if the war breaks out again, it would be much more devastating than the one that ended in November 2022.
The Prime Minister insinuated “there is a thinking that some countries would support us if war broke out.” The Ethiopian government has been making accusations against Eritrea that it is using the TPLF forces to stir conflict in the region. Military and political alliance between Derbretsion led TPLF and Eritrean government now seems to be a confirmed development. Border areas along Zalambessa is said to be opened.
The TPLF denies there is no preparation for war. It invited African Union mediators and the international community to visit Tigray and “observe the truth,” as reported by DW Amharic.
The TPLF stated in its statement that religious leaders, intellectuals and business people could verify the situation.
Earlier this week, local news sources reported that the TPLF mobilized huge forces and made moves to the Wolkait area from three directions. The intention was to take control of the area by military forces. The area is currently under the administration of the locals who have been struggling for the recognition of their identity.
Wolkait was under the Gondar province before the TPLF incorporated it to the Tigray region after toppling Colonel Mengistu Hailemariam’s administration in 1991. As a political force commanding control at the center, the TPLF easily legalized the annexation by making it part of the Tigray region. However, it lost it following the war it allegedly started in November 2020 when it allegedly attacked the Northern Command of the Ethiopian Defense Force.
The TPLF is reclaiming Wolkat on grounds of the Pretoria agreement arguing that the provision is for “constitutional resolution of ‘contested areas’ ”
Although one of the core provisions of the Pretoria Agreement, which ended the bloody conflict in November 2022, was for the TPLF forces to disarm. However, the TPLF has still over 200,000 armed combatants. Yet, a military faction broke away from the armed TPLF forces which was organized as “Tigray Defense Force.” The new group calls itself a Tigray Peace Force (TPF) and has been training in the Afar region of Ethiopia. The number of the army they are commanding is not yet independently verified. However, there are credible reports that the group crossed to the Tigray region to challenge the TPLF. They seem to be against the TPLF and Eritrea alliance.
