Toronto – Sudanese officials in the eastern parts of the country bordering with Ethiopia allege that “militia backed by Ethiopian army” made an incursion into Sudanese territories. The incident occurred this week.

Sudan Tribune cited officials from Al-Fashqa area to report Sudan’s “security vacuum caused by Sudan’s internal war” exploited by “Ethiopian militia,” and their Ethiopian army backers.  The official whose name is undisclosed made allegations that Sudanese farmers are denied access to “their farm” and a new incursion is made into the Sudanese farmland.

Sudan Tribune also quoted Mubarak Al-Nour, whom it said is vice president of the Eastern Sudan Coordination Committee, as saying “There is a new incursion by Ethiopian militias into the same lands that were previously recovered by the army.”

The Sudanese allegation came amid reports of an attack against Ethiopian farmers in the border area this week.  Ethio Focus, a local news source, on Saturday reported that 12 farmers were killed and more that 430 castles were looted by Sudanese forces. The incident occurred as Sudan is getting relative peace from a deadly civil war that claimed tens of thousands of its citizens.

Notably, Sudanese Forces invaded a vast area of Ethiopian territory when the Ethiopian Defense Force in the border area was withdrawn from the area for “law enforcement operation” in the Tigray region of Ethiopia  when the TPLF forces attacked the Northern command of the defense force in November 2020.  They were able to control up to 70 kilometers of land in the Ethiopian territory.

The border area along the Ethio-Sudan border is one of the areas impacted by the war between the Ethiopian government and armed rebels in the Amhara region of Ethiopia.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia has not yet remarked on the latest Sudanese allegation.  The relation between Sudan and Ethiopia has been weakened in recent years. On the other hand, Al Burhan’s government has forged a strong alliance with Eritrea from which his government reportedly received military support in the war against the Rapid Support Force.
