Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has issued an urgent warning about the deepening humanitarian crisis in Ethiopia, where ongoing conflicts in the Amhara and Oromia regions are overwhelming the fragile healthcare system. The organization reports a severe lack of skilled medical personnel and essential surgical supplies, putting countless lives at risk.
According to the ICRC, hospitals in conflict-affected areas are under immense strain, with many victims of gunshot wounds and other trauma unable to receive timely and adequate surgical care. The shortage of surgical specialists, compounded by logistical barriers to delivering critical medical supplies, has created a life-threatening situation for injured civilians.
In response, the ICRC partnered with Alert Comprehensive Specialized Hospital in Addis Ababa to deliver trauma and reconstructive surgery training to regional surgeons. The training, conducted in two rounds during April and May 2025, involved six surgeons from hospitals in Adola, Mendi, Shambu, Debark, Fenoteselam, and Woldiya. Emergency surgical kits and life-saving supplies were also distributed to these facilities to help alleviate the pressure.
Firsthand accounts from healthcare professionals describe dire conditions, with overstretched medical teams, insufficient equipment, and a relentless flow of wounded patients. Many doctors warn that without sustained international support, the capacity to deliver surgical care will continue to erode, further endangering lives.
The crisis comes amid intensifying violence in Ethiopia. In Amhara, clashes between federal forces and the Fano militia have led to widespread displacement, killings, and arbitrary arrests, as documented by the Ethiopian Human Rights Commission and international observers. Access to many areas remains restricted, complicating aid efforts.
In Oromia, the conflict between government troops and the Oromo Liberation Army continues to generate heavy civilian casualties. Reports from human rights organizations point to massacres, forced displacements, and village destruction in western and southern parts of the region.
These regional conflicts are compounded by a nationwide healthcare workers’ strike, now in its third month. Medical professionals are demanding fair wages, improved working conditions, and protection from violence. The federal government has declared the strike illegal and urged workers to return, but has also been accused of arresting and intimidating union leaders, drawing criticism from Amnesty International and other rights groups.
As multiple crises converge—worsening armed conflict, a collapsing healthcare system, and increasing state repression—calls are growing for humanitarian access and international engagement. The ICRC urges all parties to respect humanitarian law and allow aid organizations to operate freely to prevent further deterioration of the situation.
