Toronto – The cost of living crisis in Ethiopia does seem to be only worsening – especially in the capital Addis Ababa. Yet, the government is giving greenlight (not amber light) for private schools in the city to hike school fees up to 65 percent, based on a report from TiKVA – a local telegram channel based news provider, which cited the Reporter.

1,227 private schools in the capital could make changes to their fee structures starting the next academic year. The City Council  passed the bylaw 194/2017 to regulate that. 358 other private schools will not be able to make the fee adjustment.  They will not be making new adjustments as they have done in the 2016 Ethiopian academic year (2024 G.C.) The new adjustments will remain in place for the next three years.

It is indicated the private schools were proposing up to 90 percent increase on grounds of inflation in the country. Ethiopian Birr lost over 100 percent of its value after the ruling Prosperity Party introduced a major macroeconomic reform in July 2024 ending the fixed exchange regime in favor of market based one.

Only one school , a high school, is allowed to make a 65 percent free adjustment. It is unspecified why only one school is given such a privilege.

It is said that  a “study” was undertaken by a committee composed of parents, the city administration, the city’s plan and development office, and Ethiopian Statistic Service – among others.

“Quality of schools” is reportedly one of the factors considered to set the 65 percent cap.  Schools are classified under four categories. Level 4 is the highest category. It is not clear whether there was discussion on the desirability of such a formal  classification from the point of view of formalizing social class.
