Toronto – Mulugeta Kebede, Ethiopia’s Legendary soccer player reportedly passed away in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa.
Saint George Sports Association announced the news on its social media page.
Mulugeta, who was born and grew up in Dessie, started his soccer career with Pepsi soccer club in the city. He played for three years for this club. In the provincial cup in the 80’s , he played a crucial role for Team Wollo which became a champion twice.
He then joined St. George Club in Addis Ababa in 1984. He played for more than 13 years at the St. George Club. He has also earned titles as star player and goal scorer during the Ethiopian clubs championship.
According to St, George Club Association, the team won the Ethiopian Championship seven times and six times in the Premier League. “Cunning, fast and talented striker” in the history of Ethiopian soccer, that is how many fans remember him. He got nick names like “Asheber” (could translate to “intimidating”) due to his actions in the pitch.
Mulugeta has also played for Ethiopian National team for many years. Particularly, he is remembered for the crucial role he played when Ethiopia won the East and Central Africa cup in 1987.
After retiring from soccer, he had been living in the United States for many years with his wife and two children. He returned to Ethiopia a few years ago.
Details of the funeral arrangement are undisclosed at this time.
