Ethiopia, a country rich in history and cultural diversity, has long grappled with governance challenges, ethnic tensions, and political instability. In 2018, when Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed came to power, many Ethiopians envisioned a new dawn—one of reconciliation, prosperity, and democratic transformation. The establishment of the Prosperity Party was presented as a bold step toward national unity, moving away from ethnic-based politics and fostering a centralized approach to governance.
However, six years into Abiy Ahmed’s leadership, Ethiopia finds itself in turmoil. The Prosperity Party, once a beacon of hope, has become synonymous with power consolidation, political repression, and deepening authoritarian tendencies. Ethiopia’s path toward democracy has been obstructed by censorship, militarization, ethnic conflicts, and economic instability. The dream of prosperity remains elusive, overshadowed by growing unrest and governance failures.
The Promise of Unity: A Grand Vision Unravels
When Abiy Ahmed took office, Ethiopia was engulfed in political upheaval. The ruling coalition, the Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF), had dominated Ethiopian politics for nearly three decades but was plagued by ethnic divisions and widespread dissatisfaction. Recognizing the need for reform, Abiy dismantled the EPRDF and created the Prosperity Party, promising a departure from ethnic federalism and a transition to a more unified national identity.
The early days of the Prosperity Party were marked by optimism. Abiy projected himself as a reformer, winning international acclaim and securing the Nobel Peace Prize in 2019. The vision of national prosperity appeared attainable—economic reforms were initiated, and political prisoners were released. Ethiopia seemed poised for a promising future.
However, as political consolidation deepened, cracks began to appear. The centralization of governance under the Prosperity Party led to widespread distrust among ethnic groups, many of whom felt their interests were being sidelined. Instead of fostering inclusivity, the new political structure amplified old grievances and fueled resentment. Opposition parties struggled to operate freely, and critics of the government faced intimidation and suppression.
The Descent into Authoritarianism
Rather than strengthening democratic institutions, the Prosperity Party has presided over one of Ethiopia’s most turbulent periods, marked by conflict, political repression, and suppression of civil liberties. The party’s promise of prosperity has become a mechanism for control, silencing dissent while consolidating power under Abiy Ahmed and his loyalists.
1. The Suppression of Opposition
– Political opponents have been jailed, exiled, or silenced through intimidation tactics.
– Independent journalism has been crushed, with media outlets accused of spreading anti-government sentiment facing shutdowns.
– The electoral process has been tainted by irregularities, manipulation, and voter intimidation.
Ethiopia’s shift toward one-party dominance has undermined its democratic aspirations, replacing open debate with state-sponsored narratives that favor the ruling elites.
2. The Weaponization of the Military
– Ethiopia’s armed forces have been increasingly used to suppress political dissent, particularly in regions experiencing unrest.
– Crackdowns in Tigray, Oromia, and Amhara have resulted in thousands of deaths, mass arrests, and civilian displacement.
– Security forces have been accused of human rights abuses, including extrajudicial killings, enforced disappearances, and suppression of protests.
What was once a government focused on peace and reform has now militarized governance, using force as a tool for political dominance.
3. Ethnic Tensions and Political Instability
– Ethiopia remains deeply divided along ethnic lines, with competing factions vying for influence.
– Regional conflicts have escalated, with militias resisting federal control.
– The promise of national unity has collapsed, replaced by territorial disputes, ethnic violence, and deepening distrust between the state and its citizens.
Abiy’s push for a centralized political system has alienated Ethiopia’s diverse populations, many of whom view the Prosperity Party as an instrument of suppression rather than inclusion.
The Economic and Humanitarian Fallout
Beyond political turmoil, Ethiopia’s economy has suffered immensely under the Prosperity Party’s governance.
– Inflation has skyrocketed, making basic goods unaffordable.
– Unemployment has risen, particularly among youth, increasing frustrations.
– Millions are displaced, struggling for survival as conflict disrupts daily life.
While Abiy Ahmed’s administration boasts economic reforms, the reality is stark—Ethiopia’s working class, farmers, and marginalized communities continue to bear the brunt of economic mismanagement.
Meanwhile, high-ranking officials and military generals enjoy wealth and privileges, further widening the gap between the ruling elite and ordinary Ethiopians.
Despite Ethiopia’s worsening crisis, the international community remains hesitant to intervene decisively.
– Western governments express concerns, yet diplomatic relations take precedence over human rights.
– Sanctions and aid restrictions have had limited impact, failing to pressure the government into reform.
– Global humanitarian organizations continue to sound alarms, but international inaction leaves Ethiopians suffering in silence.
Ethiopia’s strategic position in the Horn of Africa, combined with geopolitical interests, has made global actors reluctant to take bold steps, allowing the Prosperity Party to expand its grip unchecked.
Can Ethiopia Reclaim Its Democratic Future?
Despite the current trajectory, Ethiopia’s history is one of resilience. The nation has overcome dictatorship, invasions, and revolutions—and it can reclaim its future.
However, change requires:
– Holding leaders accountable for governance failures.
– Empowering opposition voices to challenge state narratives.
– Ensuring free and fair elections without intimidation.
– Demanding transparency in economic and political reforms.
Ethiopians must reclaim their rights and their future, pushing back against repression and demanding true prosperity—not just in name, but in economic stability, social justice, and democratic governance.
Conclusion: A Nation on the Brink
The rise and decline of the Prosperity Party is a reflection of missed opportunities and political ambitions overtaking national interests. Ethiopia stands at a crossroads, facing a choice: continue down the path of authoritarianism or restore democratic governance and inclusivity.
Until Ethiopia prioritizes justice, human dignity, and political transparency, the dream of prosperity will remain an illusion, buried beneath repression and growing.

2). Simple Practical Solutions:
i). Ethiopia Has Neither Stepchildren Nor Second-Class Citizens: Ethiopia has 86 unique ethnics with distinct culture, language, tradition, etc. Ethiopia belongs to all 86 equally!
ii). Leave Ethiopia to Ethiopians: It is their country! They live & work in Ethiopia! Let them chart their destiny! Anything less is hypocritical, condescending, and insulting!
iii). Road to Arat-Kilo [Palace & Parliament] is One-Way →Get elected by Ethiopians!
iv). Let’s stop being part of the problem if we don’t want to be part of the solution! Unless, of course, we are on a mission to stir trouble, wreak havoc, and destroy Ethiopia!
v). Promote democracy, unity/harmony, and multi-prong collective development! “እኛ – ኢትዮጵያ ውስጥ – የፈለግንበት ቦታ ኼደን እንኑር! ሌሎች ዘሮች ግን – የኛ ክልል አይድረሱ!” – ዬት ያደርሰናል?
