Toronto – General Tadesse Worede led Interim Administration in Tigray is warning against foreign relations in the region whose purpose is “unknown.”  It called it “unacceptable.”

The administration on Thursday released a statement in Tigrigna language, via the region’s communication office, which is shared on the social media page of the office.

The statement unspecified as to which entity is undertaking the foreign relation.  Yet, it underscored the harmful nature of such relation to the region. “The move is a dangerous one that makes Tigray stateless,” it said.

For the administration, the focus is on “the full implementation” of the Pretoria Peace agreement which ended the war between the TPLF led Tigray region of Ethiopia and the Federal government under Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed.

When Tadesse Worede was sworn in as the Interim President of the region towards the end of March this year, he signed what the Federal government called “covenant” with a list of eight responsibilities. One of them was to end the illegal, as the Federal government calls it, foreign relation of entities in the region.

He has been criticized over failure to act against the TPLF’s faction under Debretsion Gebremichael in the context of ending alleged relations with the Eritrean government and other forces including Egypt.

Some military generals who support the faction have allegedly been holding talks with Eritrean officials whose aim is the formation of a military alliance in the event of war against the Abiy Ahmed led government. Opposition parties in the region and some key political figures have been expressing concern about it. They see it as a move that will make  Tigray as a battle ground again.

The Eritrean government and Debretsion led TPLF faction have been denying any clandestine relation. The relation between Eritrea and the Abiy Ahmed led administration has been constantly deteriorating for well over a year now. There are fears that war could break out at any time.

Meanwhile, Getatchew Reda’s faction is accusing the Debretsion led faction again. In a statement it released today, it said that the Debretsion’s faction is working to take Tigray to another war. It warned against alliance either with Fano forces or Eritrea. The TPLF is working with outside powers, it said.
