Getachew’s faction now sounding as an one of the opposition forces in Tigray region

Toronto – A pattern of legalized return of Debretsion led TPLF into Tigray regional state administration is unfolding in the region. What started as a “creeping coup” against Getachew Reda led administration which ousted him from power in March this year, first led to the appointment of a TPLF favorite figure as president for the rest of the Interim Administration during which was initially a Pretoria Agreement provision but later the Federal parliament had to involved as a legal tool was needed to extend the terms of the Administration for one more year.
Eleven days after swearing in as Interim President of the Tigray region, Tadesse Worede, on Monday, announced his cabinet members. He named Amanuel Assefa, deputy chairman of the Debretsion led faction of the TPLF, as his deputy. Politicians who served as central committee and executive committee of this faction have been also appointed in the new interim administration. However, their numbers and identities are unspecified.
Getachew Reda’s faction of the TPLF has reportedly issued a statement opposing the new cabinet and its apparent domination by the Debretsion led TPLF faction. They argued that the cabinet is not inclusive.
DW Amharic reported the new president had made a press statement only to media outlets close to the government. Apart from announcing cabinet members, Tadesse has disclosed the Interim government’s priorities.
Ensuring Peace and security of people in the region is among top priorities. The Tigray region has been facing a crisis like security situation. There was an instance when Getachew Reda unveiled that there are prison facilities in the region not known to the administration. There has also been a rise in crime including kidnapping and murder. Apart from that, there has recently been a report about a situation that could potentially lead to conflict in the region due to tension between the two TPLF factions and the alleged involvement of the Eritrean government.
The issue of illegal gold mining in the region is in the list of action areas. Tadesse Worede has reportedly expressed concern that if the situation is not controlled, it could invite powerful forces with a capacity to “twist arms.” The report in connection with illegal mining, from many local sources including from the region, was that key military generals were involved in it and illegal smuggling via Eritrea. Last week, Tadesse reinstated three military generals who were in charge of the regional armed forces months after they were suspended by the Getachew Reda led Interim Administration.
Improving the justice system is also identified as one of the priority areas, according to DW Amharic report. It remains to be seen whether Tadesse will implement his new policies. When he was sworn in as interim president about less than a fortnight ago, he signed an eight points covenant the Federal government prepared. He did so in the presence of members of the diplomatic corps in Addis Ababa and PM Abiy Ahmed.
