Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – Lieutenant General Tadesse Werede has been appointed as the new President of the Tigray Interim Administration (TIA), succeeding Getachew Reda. Lt. Gen. Tadesse, who previously served for two years as the Deputy Head of the TIA and Head of the Cabinet Secretariat, officially assumed his new role today.
Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, in a statement on social media, noted that extensive discussions were held over the past month, considering the Ethiopian Constitution, the Pretoria Agreement, and diplomatic advice, to determine the leadership transition following the end of Getachew Reda’s term. He expressed confidence that Lt. Gen. Tadesse, having served as Getachew’s deputy for the past two years and understanding the region’s challenges and strengths, is well-positioned to lead Tigray forward, fulfilling the people’s desire for peace and development.
Yesterday, PM Abiy publicly thanked Getachew Reda for his two years of service in leading the TIA during a critical transitional period after the Pretoria Peace Agreement of November 2, 2022. Getachew, a former vocal critic of PM Abiy during the Tigray conflict, had advocated for the implementation of the peace agreement. The leadership change follows divisions within the TPLF that emerged after its 14th Congress in August 2024, leading to a split between factions led by Debretsion Gebremichael and Getachew Reda, despite mediation efforts.

I hope and pray for the upright and noble people of Tigray that with appointment of this countryman will finally bring peace and stability they have been in want of since the 1970’s. Millions have perished, displaced and forced into dangerous trips looking for peace. Mothers there have had no one wiping their tears for their sons and daughters who lost their Allah Blessed lives in senseless wars triggered by the deacons/darasaas of Marx, Lenin and Mao. Enough, enough and enough is enough.
