Toronto – Amhara Fano In Wollo (Bete Amhara) has reportedly intensified offensive in areas surrounding South Wollo administration center, Dessie, in the past few weeks.

Ethio News, local news sources with links to the Amhara region of Ethiopia, on Saturday reported that Fano forces launched multiple military offensives outside of Dessie and Woldia cities.

Government forces have been patrolling the city with machine gun mounted pickup trucks. Government forces’ presence at exit and entry points to the city is reportedly intensified.

About two days before the report, Fano forces operating in the region made claims that they had encircled the city. Located about 400 kilometers North of the capital Addis Ababa along the Addis Ababa Mekelle road, the city is encircled with chains of mountains especially in the east and west side.

Borkena spoke to sources from the city and confirmed that there were heavy casualties from the recent battles between Fano forces and government forces – mainly police and militia.

Also, Ethio News cited residents from the city as saying “we have seen ambulances shuttling to the hospital carrying those wounded from the fighting nearby.”

In the case of Woldia,  it has been a center from which government forces have been  shelling Fano forces positions surrounding the city with artillery and other heavy weaponry for most part of the week.
