Toronto – Ethiopia on Saturday inaugurated a newly built convention center in the capital Addis Ababa.  Named  Addis International Convention Center ,the facility has two five star hotels, restaurants, gym and other recreation services.  The two five star hotels have a combined capacity of over 1000 rooms.

Fana, a state owned media outlet, reported that the center also has 15 ,000 square meter open air event space. As well, it has over 2000 parking spots. The facility is built on a 40-hectare area. It is the largest in the country and is intended to host international and domestic events.

Ethiopian News Agency, state media, reported that the center also  “features two large halls, each with a capacity to accommodate 3,000 to 4,000 people including eight small and medium meeting halls, accommodating a total of up to 10,000 people.”

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, along with senior officials of his government, attended the inauguration.  “The Addis International Convention Center, which we inaugurated today, is a critical piece of infrastructure that will expand our nation’s capacity to host large-scale conferences and exhibitions,” Abiy Ahmed wrote on his social media page.

The government anticipates that the facility will stimulate the economy by generating foreign currency and also create employment opportunities.

Currently, the  facility is connected to Lemi Park and a road construction is reportedly underway to link the facility directly to the Airport.

The government hopes that the facility will attract major international events including trade fairs linking the continent. The aim is to make Addis Ababa  – a city over which ethnic Oromo Nationalist parties claim exclusive ownership, a destination for major global gatherings.

Addis International Convention Center (AICC) is the first major public-private sector partnership project.

  1. Beautiful! Now everyone has to make sure that the Rastaman wannabe in some joint out there in missionary cake infested western part of the country will not be able to send some of his dumbbell hooligans and do something just to get publicity.

  2. Tourists will come to Ethiopia when there is Peace all over Ethiopia. As long as the Amhara and Oromia regions are inflicted war zones, and elsewhere too. What you are doing could be good; but it It is a ‘Cry for the moon’.
