Toronto – Asrat Haile, Ethiopia’s legendary soccer player and coach, passed away at the age of 72. Nicknamed as “Goradew,” an Amharic word which translates to “The Sword,” he has served his country for over 53 years as player and coach.
News of his death was heard on Friday this week. He is laid to rest on Sunday in the capital Addis Ababa.
As a coach, he won trophies for St. George Club – for which he played for a long time – several times.
He had been sick for a long time. According to sources, he was suffering from a severe headache and physicians whom he saw in Addis Ababa gave him a referral overseas and a fundraising campaign was created in his name in 2023.
During his career, he has coached the Ethiopian National team. He has trained Walia (the National team) three times between 2001 and 2004.
From stories trending on social media about Ethiopian soccer fans, there is noticeable shock with the news of his death.
The Ethiopian Football Federation (EFF) expressed condolences in a social media update.
Asrat is survived by his wife and five children.
