Toronto – Federal High Court in the capital Addis Ababa sentenced Tadios Tantu, a respected journalist and author, to six years and three months of jail terms without parole. The court also ruled that he pay 20,000 Ethiopian birr in fine.
Government accused him of three counts of offenses : “disseminating hate speech”, “inciting violence” and “obstructing the movement of the Defense Force.”
It is an interview that Tadios Tantu gave to an Ethiopia based Youtube channel that the government reportedly used against him as evidence in the “disseminate hate speech” charge.
Tadios used to be active in Ethiopian opposition party politics before. In recent years, he was speaking out against the Orommumma ideology and its move to Oromize Ethiopia at the expense of others.
Tadios appeared at the constitutional affairs bench in Ledeta. He has been in jail for more than two years now.
The court ruling against the eighty four years old Ethiopian who is also a father of six is widely seen as politically motivated repression and rights abuse rather than a court proceeding.
Yared Hailemariam, prominent Human rights advocate in Ethiopia, remarked “for me than justice, the vengeance is more visible.”
The court ruling is trending among Ethiopians in social media. The sentiment is the same ; the ruling is politically motivated.
According to reports emerging on social media, he was asked if he has something he wants to share to be considered for sentencing. His response was “You can rule whatever you want, I will not teach weakness to the youth in my old age.”

This is disgraceful. The citizen at this advanced age should not be sent to prison. He did not commit a homicide. Let this elderly man go. This must be reported to the UN Human Rights Commission. This is an 84-yr old man, for crying out loud! Let him go back to his caring family. This is disgusting. This is nothing but abuse of the elderly.
Abiy Ahmed is a genocidal criminal. There is a lot of competition for that position from Wadi Afawarqi, the leader of North Korea in Africa. A day will come when Tadios Tantu will be free and will receive honors. Just to remind you, if he were in Shabiyaland Eritara, Afawarqi would have had him for lunch already. Your time will be better spent if you cover your own pink behind.
Meanwhile, I’m very disappointed to see the editors of this esteemed website seem to have succumbed to the destructive diatribe of misguided individuals by using the term .Oromummaa’ as derogatory to denigrate others. How do you feel if I coin up and use a term ‘Amharaness’ as pejorative to insult my dear neighbors Amhara brothers and sisters? I am sad that I may be losing those I have been counting on as reliable companions in my endeavor to bridge gaps being perpetrated by bigots and connivers just to line their pockets. Oromuma is what is destroying the country and sending the 84 year old brave man into prison. It is not a derogatory term but a simple fact to point that it is a misguided, dishonest, disgraceful, disgusting, atrocious, inhuman, incompetent, paganistic , murderous , blood thirsty, shameful, backward and out dated belief system. Those staying silent and not voicing their opposition of it are the same if not worse than the perpetrators of these heinous crimes Oromuma is committing. LONG LIVE TADIOS TANTU!!!!
The so called Tadios Tantu is extremely very rude old man. A group of YouTubers who hates Oromo community invited Tadios Tantu to insult the entire Oromo people live in YouTube. According to his crime 6 years is less for him. Where are his sponsors who invited him to insult Oromumaa! It’s Borkena’s friends who invited Tadios Tantu to insult the Oromian people.
