Toronto – thousands of outraged Tigray women took to the street to condemn gender-based violence, rape, and kidnapping in the region. The protest was in Mekelle, the regional capital.  It was organized by women rights activists and women associations in the region, according to sources.

DW Amharic on Tuesday reported that youth, children, and mothers marched on the street of Mekelle chanting slogans that condemned the pervasive attack on women and kidnappings in the region. They marched from Romanat Square to Getachew Reda’s office, president of the Interim Administration in the Region.

Families of those who were victims of the attack have also demanded justice, the source added. “Justice For Tigray Woman,” and “Stop Gender-Based Violence” were among the slogans that the protestors chanted.

They have also been calling out names of victims who were recently kidnapped and killed. Last week, a sixteen-year-old girl who had been missing since March in Adwa town was confirmed dead after the suspects confessed and located the place where they buried her body.

The protestors in Mekelle condemned what they called government negligence in connection with the problem. “During the war many women were raped and killed. Now when we expect that it will end, we are being attacked by our brothers. A situation whereby women can not make it home safely is being observed,”  Million Gebremariam, who took part in the protest, told DW Amharic.

Saron Haile Selassie, another participant, is quoted as saying “The government is not taking measures; we have not seen change.”

The head of the Justice office in the region, Hadush Tesfa, reportedly condemned the gender-based attack and told the protestors that the government was taking measures.

He said, “Although we have a complex problem, [acting on] violence against women is not something that can be postponed for tomorrow. The government has passed decisions that are capable of stopping the attack.  Soon measures to demonstrate that will be taken. Your demand is right. The violence that is happening is clear. It is absolutely unacceptable…”  he said, as reported by DW Amharic.

Recently, there has been violence against women in Mekelle, Adwa, Adigrat, and other towns in the region, the report added.

Meanwhile, Tigray region high court president and deputy president tendered a resignation  letter citing existing “circumstances” that would not allow them to carry out their duties “properly,” according to a report by Addis Maleda.

Prevalence of sexual violence in Ethiopian workplaces: systematic review and meta-analysis
Tigray regional state’s (36.1%) capital has the highest rate of sexual violence of any city in Ethiopia, including the entire province of Oromia (24.1%), Amhara (22.6%), and SNNPR (8.2%).

Based on study location, Tigray national regional state had the highest prevalence of pooled Workplace Sexual Violence (WSV )36.1% (95% Confidence interval 12.8% to 61.5%), followed by Oromia national regional state 24.1% (95% Confidence interval(CI) 1.7% to 52.3%), Amhara national regional state 22.6% (95% Confidence interval 10% to 36.8%), Addis Ababa 18.8% (95% Confidence interval 2.2% to 40%), and SNNPR 18.2% (95% Confidence interval 12.2% to 24.9%).
These statistics are only collected from workplaces. If those researchers were able to gather data on violence against women in settings other than workplaces and government offices, Tigray may be Africa’s only province with the highest rate of sexual violence. It should be highlighted that the majority of the sexual assault reported during the two-year war was committed by Tigrayans against Tigrayan women and girls, rather than the Eritrean or Ethiopian ferdearl army. Unfortunately, recent stories of sexual violence have brought this fact this fact to light.

Mekelle is detecting a shocking spike in gender-based violence against women and girls, which is expected to elevate the sexual violence rate in Tigray as well. Ultimately, this surge is anticipated to negatively impact the Ethiopian and African sexual violence rates and significantly influence the global sexual violence rate index. This surge in Ethiopia is just preceded by the Nigerian sexual violence rate, considering the prevalence of this nature on the entire African continent.

TPLF leaders, including Mister Getachew, must all resign, and they are power-hungry, narcistic men. They are career criminals.
Tigray is a global champion of sexual violence against its own children and women , including monks: TPLF leaders are allowing violence against girls and women and must be stopped. A drastic measure must be taken, including for minor offenses

Most of sexual violences and even killings of Tigrayan women and girls reported during the 2-year-long war are committed by Tigrayan men., not all crimes are committed by eritrean or ethiopian army. Stop your misinformation .

  3. I remember Ato DebreTsion talking about how bad the rest of Ethiopia is comparted to Tigray region a few years ago. Making cases that Tigray is safe and secured, and they went to election to be independent? Then the king destroyed TPLF and its retarded members in a way they never expected or seen before. That was Guraa bichaa…..

Most of all i remember Debretsion’s Blue glove and the yellow Helicopter ”Sebleye”

Now Tigray people has to pay for all that miscalculation, ego and backwardness…
Hoping Tigray people will be free of parasite TPLF… bad for everything.

  4. I say this to my very dear daughters and sisters in Tigray. Do not give up your struggle to get the justice you deserve for the despicable crimes committed against you by bigots and thugs. My family and I are with you in your cry for justice. Sooner if not later you will have a day in court of law you deserve inside or outside the country. The ICJ At The Hague has been taking notes about your unimaginable ordeal and it is a matter of time before they charge those responsible and issue warrants for their arrests. We are with you there in spirit wiping your tears. May The Almighty Our Creator be with you and comfort you!!!
