Toronto – Ethiopian Airlines plane reportedly avoided another near-collision incident with an Emirates plane over Somalia Airspace last Sunday.  ETH 690 and UAE722 were both flying at 37,000 feet.

In an incident report released on Tuesday, Somaliland Civil Aviation and Airports Authority said  “On the night of Sunday, March 24, 2024, around 12:43 in East Africa, an Emirates Airways flight UAE722 flying at an altitude of 37,000ft, and an Ethiopian Airlines flight ETH690 at an altitude of 37,000ft almost collided. after Mogadishu Control gave these two planes the same time and place where they were meeting.”

From the report, the Somaliland Air Traffic Controller’s intervention seems to have helped avoid the collision based on the report.

“A few minutes before the collision, the efforts made by the Somaliland Air Traffic Controllers and the pilot of the Ethiopian Airlines caused the pilot to quickly change his altitude and climb to 39000ft,” said Somaliland Civil Aviation and Airports Authority.

According to the statement, the problem was caused by traffic controllers in Somalia. It blamed air traffic controllers in Mogadishu, Somalia, for “regularly ” making “mistakes like  these.” There were reports sometime last month that a similar incident was about to happen over Somalian airspace. Emirates and Ethiopian Airlines planes were involved in the incident. However, Ethiopian Airlines did not confirm it.

Furthermore, the statement said such mistakes “are a threat to the safety of international flights.”

“We share with international agencies and the whole world that the stubbornness and lack of knowledge seen in the Mogadishu Tower is a threat to the safety of the air,” Somaliland Civil Aviation and Airports Authority cautioned.

As of now, the government of Somalia has not responded to allegations from Somaliland about the air traffic incident.

Ethiopian Airlines has not remarked about the latest incident. Borkena attempted to reach out by phone but it was not a success. An email is sent out to Ethiopian Airlines Corporate communication. Will update you if the airline remarks on it.

Tension developed between Somaliland and Ethiopia on the one hand, and the government of Somalia on the other after the former signed a memorandum of understanding on January 1, 2024. The agreement was meant to give Ethiopia 20 kilometers of coastal land for maritime and military purposes on a fifty-year lease in exchange for a share from Ethiopian Airlines. Recognition of independent statehood was also part of the commitment on the part of Ethiopia, according to Somaliland sources.

  1. These is all that near miss stories are suspicious and the foolish Abiy’s has to be upfront about it and sooner the better.. Many reliable sources confirmed that rhe suscessionist somali clan group region in Hargaisa of Somaliia are behind all these airspace errands and illega airl piracy activities and Ethiopia regime is aware of it. Since the region of the so-called somali land has no
legi authorization of Somalia’s airpace, the group has bought second hand and an outdated radio technology from Addis regime , which was payed by the rogue Emerats.. And this is what making all these unintelligible and made up stories. If anythig happens or throughly checked the said incidents, it will be very easy to find what has happened and will be pinpointed with precision who tampering with. the fight routes and interfering air trafiic communication system, because every modern plane and jet passaget is equipped with the lastest satellite communications trchnologies and GPS per second monitoring capability during the flight. Too, the Borkena new outlet to report this dishonest and flawed story without further investigation to make its readers out of sense. As mentioned., this is all Abiy’s foolish and mindless own making and every day idiotic poltical errands even now unknowingly endagering the EAL’s international repution, its safety and commercial viability successes by putting into cheap political games.

  3. It seems like Mogadishu Controller did this purposely, Totally retarded for doing this to 2 friendly country UAE and Ethiopia…

  4. What worries me most about this near tragic story is, one of these days it may happen and then the blame game will erupt full throttle. I can see how it is becoming a nightmare for the very capable management of the award winning airline. It is almost a catch 22 situation. Its aircrafts have to fly thru Somalia’s airspace to destinations in Asia and the Arabian Peninsula. The responsibility to keep airspace safe rests mainly on Mogadishu. The pilots of the airline have a stellar history of ingenuity in their profession and mastery of their aircraft. We all remember how bigots of all sorts including this one so-called consultant with ABC News who came out and blame that young pilot for the Boeing 737-Max disaster. But it turned out to be a defective plane made at the factory of the manufacturer. Bigots and haters of that gem of the colored all what they need is bad news about it. They have been fuming at the extraordinary success of the airline since its inception. They have been seething in anger that those ‘niggers’ are masters of their trade. So that peerless genius leader of the airline should come up with a back up system to avoid disasters of this sort during flights in that airspace. All it needs is one bigoted air traffic controller at the Mogadishu tower to line up two aircraft flying in opposite direction and he will disappear into the wilderness of the lawless country. This is not funny, okay!
