Heavy fighting is reported between Fano forces and government soldiers in Wuchale town, South Wollo, Amhara region of Ethiopia.

The fighting broke out on Sunday after Fano Forces launched a surprise attack on government forces in the town, according to a report by Ethiopian Media Services (EMS) which cited sources from the area.

Reinforcement that was heading to Wuchale to support attacked government forces in Wuchale was ambushed in Genbober locality – according to the source.

However, the Defense Force is said to have control of the Ambasel Mountain from which it is shelling Wuchale town.

Although the source mentioned that the fighting was a severe one the extent of causality has not been specified.

The Wollo area of the Amhara region – especially the north part- has recently seen recurring fighting between the Fano Forces and government forces.

Other media outlets with links in the Amhara region have been reporting recurring clashes between Fano forces and government forces in Gojam, Shewa, and Gondar as well.

The region has been under a state of emergency since August 2023. Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s administration requested the parliament to extend it by four months on alleged grounds that there are remaining works to be done in the region to bring the region into normalcy.

Extensive Human Rights violations have been reported in the region since the Federal government imposed a state of emergency in the region.  A recent report from an ethnic Amhara advocacy group indicated that at least 1,600 civilians have been killed in the region by drone strikes and extra-judicial killings – among other things. In November 2023, the United Nations Human Rights released a statement expressing concern about drone strikes in which it indicated that hundreds of civilians were killed in the region.

In the latest string of extra-judicial executions, government forces have shot dead at least 45 civilians in Merawi town – about thirty-five kilometers from Bahir Dar – hours after the battle between Fano Force and government troops. Many of the victims were reportedly dragged out of their homes in house-to-house searches and shot in the street.

In a related development, borkena learned about emerging news on Monday indicating that government forces carried out another drone strike targeting ISUZU. The victims were reportedly returning from a baptism event.  Yet, the story is not covered by many local Ethiopian sources.
