Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, President of Somalia, H.E. Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, on Friday, arrived in Ethiopia. He is in the country to attend the 37th African Union Leaders Summit.

Ethiopia’s Minister For Finance, Ahmed Shide, greeted  Hassan Sheikh upon arrival at Bole International Airport.

Tension developed between Ethiopia and Somalia after the former signed a memorandum of understanding with Somaliland in Addis Ababa on January 1, 2024.

Hassan Sheikh’s government asserts that the MoU violates the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Somalia. State and non-state actors have been expressing concern about potential conflict with wider implications for the Horn of Africa region, and have been calling for peaceful negotiation to resolve the conflict. Somali rejected the call saying space for negotiation is available only if Ethiopia retracts the MoU agreement with Somaliland.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia has not confirmed if Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud are meeting on the sidelines of the 37th African Union leaders summit.

Somaliland, which has been existing as a de facto state for about 33 years, rejects Somalia’s claim.  In a recent statement, the Foreign Affairs Ministry of Somaliland said “The Government of the Republic of Somaliland categorically rejects Somalia’s recent remarks regarding the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed by Somaliland and Ethiopia. The Memorandum of Understanding, centred on collaboration in areas of shared interest such as security, trade, and infrastructure development, is a sovereign decision made by two independent nations and does not require third-party approval.”
