Tigray’s Performance Evaluation in Addis Ababa as Abiy meets Debretsion (officially?) for the first time since the war

Tigray performance evaluation - Addis Ababa

Toronto – Abiy Ahmed and Debretsion reportedly met for the first time since the war between the Federal government and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) which ended in November 2022 with the signing of the Pretoria Peace agreement.

The office of the Prime Minister on Friday announced that  “PM Abiy Ahmed begun an in-depth review of the initiatives and progress in the Tigray Region since the inception of the Interim Regional Administration. The evaluation of Federal and Regional actors focuses on post-conflict reconstruction and implementation of the peace agreement.”

In a picture released from the office, TPLF leaders are seen holding a meeting with Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and senior members of his government.

The office of the Prime Minister did not specify a timeline as to when the meeting is expected to end.

The meeting came days after the Tigray Region Interim Government Released a statement in response to Federal government communication services. The Federal government made a claim earlier saying that an agreement was reached between Tigray and Amhara region actors to hold a referendum on areas that are now presented as “contested.” Getachew Reda’s Interim administration said the information about the referendum was  “absolutely wrong.”  The interim administration is making a claim that the agreement in Pretoria was to resolve the matter in accordance with the constitution – which incorporated the “contested” areas as part of Tigray since the 90’s. The administration is also demanding the return of internally displaced people and rejected the notion of “Genuine IDPs” that the Federal gov’t used in its statement.

Federal government’s position, as reflected in the statement from the Ministry of communication services, tends to be dismissive of the claim about famine in the Tigray region. That is another area of controversy between the Federal government and the Tigray Interim government.

The ongoing evaluation is focusing on spendings as it relates to post-conflict reconstruction in the region and the implementation of the peace agreement.

The Federal government has been making claims that it has injected a significant amount of funds to finance post-conflict reconstruction.

On the part of TPLF, disarming its forces was part of the agreement but it is something that is not independently verified so far.  However, there are unconfirmed reports that the TPLF has over 200,000 armed fighters. The organization was having over three months long evaluation – which ended just a week or so before the meeting with Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed.

It remains to be seen as to what the performance evaluation in Tigray  will reveal. The two years war between the Federal gov’t and TPLF is said to have claimed over one million lives from Afar, Amhara and Tigray regions.

The U.S. government said on Friday it is “deeply concerned,” but it has not taken a single measure thus far to demonstrate its deep concern and put an end to the mass killing of innocent people. Leaders in the West Bloc have been excessively employing the phrase “deep concern” for more than three years now.

  3. Congrats to both governments (of the same country) on the Pretoria peace agreement and how well it’s been implemented. The result is 1.000.000 dead, who knows how many are crippled or maimed some say 30 billions needed to rebuild and still Tigray has 200.000 fighters and 5.799.500 starving people (i exclude around 500 government officials that look chubby enough). Meanwhile, it was the Prosperity Gospel Government decision to start the implementation by disarming the Ahmaras even though they are poised between 2 declared enemies from Tigre and from Oromia. This has now resulted to the strong and heavy Fano movement (i really have no clue as to where a Fano victory could lead) the whole of Ahmara land being under martial law for 10months (after the 2 years of civil war) and the nationwide resentment of the PM personally who came with so much promise but delivered none. The only ones benefitting all these years is the Prosperity Gospel Party people, the close circle around the PM, while the rest are nibbling on the bread (injera) crumbs that falls off their dinner table.
To the sensible people that still live in Ethiopia, please remember how you kicked out the previous Tigray dominated government. The Oromo and the Ahmara youth and consequently the PEOPLE united and demonstrated for months, holding each others hands and dying together as they were living together! And you won.
