It is not uncommon to hear stories that many of the ethnic nationalist politicians were motivated by political grudges from previous regimes. From observations, these experiences seem to have shaped their political views, and, of course, they wear ethnic nationalist lenses in approaching not just politics but also the history of Ethiopia.
The video shared below presents an incredible history of Shaleka Paulos Getachew. Based on the narratives he shared, he had clearly been wronged during the Ethiopian revolutionary years. First, his father, General Getachew, was killed by government forces soon after Colonel Mengistu Hailemariam took power. According to Shaleka Paulos’ account, it was General Getachew who promoted Mengistu Hailemariam to the ranks of Major. Before that, he had reversed a negative assessment on Mengistu Hailemariam.
After the death of his father, Shaleka Paulos Getachew himself was arrested for seven years. With all that experience and some tragedies that happened in his life, Shaleka Paulos’s Ethiopian patriotism is unshakable. He was able to discern between Ethiopia and the leaders who were in power. For that matter, he does not seem to have bad feelings towards Colonel Mengistu Hailemariam himself. He served in the military after he was released from prison in the 1980s. He does not even have a pension now. He is supported by his children who live abroad.
Following a car accident in Hawassa where he lives, his two legs were amputated, and one of his eyes became blind. But he still managed to publish a large volume book in Amharic which he entitled “ምርጥ የሐበሻ ጀግና” (“Best Habesha Heroes”).
He is an exemplary Ethiopian patriot. Watch the video below.
