The Ethiopian Human Rights Commission (EHRC) on Monday released a statement regarding human rights violations in the Amhara region of Ethiopia.

In the statement, it is confirmed that the Ethiopian Defense Force used drone strikes and artillery attacks, resulting in many civilian deaths in the region. Local media outlets in Ethiopia have been reporting on drone strikes and artillery attacks.

Among other drone attacks, the EHRC, established by the Ethiopian government, has confirmed that there were drone strikes in North Shoa (Minjar), Gojjam, and Gondar areas of the Amhara region. In one of the drone attacks, many civilians, including a toddler, were killed.

Drone attacks in Debre Markos and Dembecha also killed many civilians. In other parts of the region, the Defense Force extensively used artillery against residential homes and civilian infrastructures. Again, all these have been reported by local media outlets, and borkena has covered them.

EHRC confirmed the stories by contacting eyewitnesses and residents from affected areas of the region. In areas like North Shoa, as many as 3,000 civilians have been displaced due to shelling and drone strikes.

It also highlighted continued extrajudicial executions by the Ethiopian Defense Forces. Victims are unarmed civilians who were either arrested from house-to-house searches on alleged grounds of supporting Fano, or they were arrested from the streets.

Schools in many parts of the region are turned into makeshift military camps for the Ethiopian government soldiers. It means that schools are closed, and students are out of school. This month, a report by the UN agency indicated that more than seven million children have not returned to school.

Rape in the context of the ongoing war in the region is also confirmed by the EHRC. According to its report, since July this year, at least 200 women were raped by Ethiopian government soldiers. The figures are from hospital sources, indicating the possibility that the number could be much higher, considering that many do not visit health facilities after becoming victims of rape.

Another key confirmation from the report is that civilian properties and crops are deliberately destroyed by government forces. Civilian infrastructures are targeted and destroyed.

EHRC called the rights violations in the Amhara region and confirmed that fighting between Fano forces and the Ethiopian Defense Forces is ongoing in many districts in the Amhara region and all zones. The testimony contrasts with a claim from the government that normalcy is restored in many parts of the Amhara region where the government imposed a six-month-long state of emergency. It also confirmed that the districts at times fall into the hands of Fano forces and at other times to government forces.

Daniel Bekele, the Director, called for a peaceful means of resolving the conflict to be given priority and for civilians and civilian infrastructures not to be targets of attacks under any circumstances.

Ethiopian government authorities have not yet responded to the statement.

  1. Somebody, please tell these two idiots to stop this stupid war!!! Wasn’t the war in Tigray that claimed the lives of close to a million citizens enough? Or is this the satanic way of population control? Were all the deaths and destruction since 1974 not enough? Haven’t we learned from the stark lesson of the fact that struggling alone does not bring life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness? If you doubt that, just look around!!! I have said this umpteen times before. Any one of those 80+ ethnic groups can NOT achieve democratic way of life or governance by struggling all alone. Not one!!! Otherwise, all what they will get is a warlord that will tell them what to do including what to think for life. If that happens, no other ethnic group will come to help them. Oromos will never see the daylight of living in democracy by struggling all alone. The same applies to Amharas, Tigres, Afars, Somalis, Gambelas, Beni Shanguls, Sidamas or any other ethnic groups in that country. The alternative is wanton deaths and destruction. In this case The Lone Ranger ain’t gonna deliver the mustard! Never!!! Take that to the bank!!!

    • A US couple has been fined ($28,000; £23,000) by a Ugandan court after they pleaded guilty to child cruelty and “inhumane treatment” of their 10-year-old foster child.

Nicholas and Mackenzie Spencer accepted the charges under a deal which saw far more serious charges dropped. Uganda court fines US couple $28,000 for child cruelty . The pair made the boy sleep on a wooden platform and fed him cold food.
They also pleaded guilty to degrading treatment, working illegally and unlawfully staying in Uganda without permits.
The couple fostered three children in Uganda, where they moved in 2017 to work as volunteers. volunteers????

  2. Mengistu used to test his new military hardware on our Eritrean brothers and sisters in the 1970’s and 80’s that led to the hardening of their desire to secede. What I hear now is the current government using the latest lethal weapon of death and destruction killing innocent civilians in the process. I have to be very apprehensive here when I call out the regime side in my complaints here. By any means, it does not mean to justify the banditry both in Western Wallagaa and Amhara regions. In both regions there is no compelling issue to raise arms. None! Those few here among us and there in the old country who have been scheming and dreaming to yank away a territory to create their personal fiefdom called ‘The Republic of Oromia’, such dumb dream will remain just as such hovering the skies of La La Land in some far away galaxy. Those who also dream to whip up a new Ethiopia based on their warped ambition is gonna remain another unfulfilled dream till the cows come home, which means fat chance.

Dear level head countrymen and women everywhere!

Those upright people who produced us all have been denied to live in peace and stability since 1974. They have been victimized by despotic rulers in cities and towns and armed bullies in the countryside. When we all think the end to their predicament is at hand, it has always been déjà vu, back to being abused by bullies and despots. It is now the time to come out in unison and pressure both the government and those aimlessly wandering in the bushes to come to the round table and sort things out to deliver peace and stability to innocent civilians. That Amhara individual victimized in these stupid conflicts is the brother and sister of all of us. That Oromo individual who is being victimized by bullies and despots is the brother and sister of all of us. This carnage can not just go on!!!

I repeat! The Republic of Oromia dreamt by connivers and hooligans will never come to fruition. On the other hand to recreate a new Ethiopia ala the bloodthirsty and mass murderers Tedros and John IV ain’t gonna happen either. You can stand the upright and harmonious people of that country at the gates of hell, but it will not happen. You hear me? It shall never happen! Never, never, never!!! I gave up!!!
