State-owned media outlets on Tuesday (the day of the Ethiopian New Year) aired video footage of Ethiopian Authorities – both federal and regional – at the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) project site.
From the information released, it is organized as an Ethiopian New Year event in a way to celebrate the fourth filling of GERD’s reservoir – apparently to demonstrate the grandiosity of Abiy Ahmed Administration’s achievement.
Many of the officials, including PM Abiy, speak with a fervor that celebrating GERD fourth filling is a priority and in a way to hide that Ethiopia is bleeding from the war in the Amhara region of Ethiopia where a six months state of emergency is imposed and internet shutdown. Stories of civilian deaths and summary executions have emerged both from local and international media outlets.
Netsanet Workneh, Comedian and TV personality, has a question and answer session. Most of the participants were regional state presidents. It was only Getachew Reda, from Tigray region, who expressed best wish that the war in different parts of Ethiopia come to an end in the new year and displaced people are returned. Some expressed concern in euphemistic way but many did not bother at all – including the Prime Minister and the Deputy Prime Minister.
At this point, GERD is said to have retained about 42 billion cubic meters of water and the civil engineering aspect project completion is said to be 98 percent while overall project completion is at 93 percent. The height of the dam has reportedly reached 620 meters. It was Kifle Horo, the project manager, who disclosed the information to government authorities.
Netsanet Workneh’s work in the event rather sounds satirical. Watch and share your comment.
