What was once South Nations, Nationalities and Peoples Region (SNNPR) — initially the only multiethnic regional state in light of Ethiopia’s ethnic based Federalism — seems to be ending a politically induced fragmentation.
This week the formation of the South Ethiopia region as the 12th regional state in Ethiopia with its capital in Arba Minch, which used to be the seat of Gamo Zone administration, and the Central Ethiopia region, the 13th regional state with its capital in Wolkite, was announced. The two regions were established in Arba Minch and Wolkite. Working language in both regions is to be Amharic- Ethiopia’s official language.
With that, what remained of the SNNPR after the Sidama zone of the region broke away to form an ethnic Sidama State, in 2019, was dissolved.
Several district level administrations are restructured as zone level administrations in the new South Ethiopia region. Amaro, Basketo, Burji, Amaro, Derashe and Ale are to be organized as zone level administrations. On the other hand, South Omo Zone which is bigger in land mass is to be sliced into two administrative zones.
Region 13 contains two zones and three districts – still a cluster form of administrations – a movement by ethnic Gurage has been opposing vehemently for over a year now. In fact, the new arrangement has fragmented Gurage further as it has formed a new “East Gurage zone.” Wazema radio report, on Saturday, said that the decision got a majority vote in the new Central Ethiopia region council.
In terms of appointment, Tilahun Kebede is named as president of South Regional state whose seat will be in Wolaita Soda while Endashaw Tassew, who has served as Federal Police Commissioner General, is named as head of the new central Ethiopia region. Tilahun Kebede was the only candidate for the position, according to sources.
The process manifested rather a simmering grievances from areas that are not content with the new administrative arrangements. In the Gamo zone, for example, there have been reports of discontent but residents were not allowed to take to the streets. Guraghe, as indicated above, has been protesting for over a year now demanding for an ethnic Gurage regional state.

There is propaganda about TPLF leaders depicting them as selfless heros who are determined to die for their Tigray and don’t want to abandon their people and flee to the west, but the truth is they undermined the strength of their enemy, and they thought they could capture Addis Ababa in a span of three days, plunder the riches, and restore their own property held by the enemy.
TPLF leaders must stop killing Tigrayans and sell their land to investors for excessive gains at expense of displaced and killed Tegaru. TPLF leaders are implictly promoting genocide of Tigray. b). For the sake of the honest, country-loving people of Tigray, may the good Lord come to their rescue before the World
witnesses — in broad day light — the self- liquidation of an Nation.

It is clear more than ever that Abiy Ahmed and his administration are showing total disregard, and even contempt of the current Ethiopian Constitution which they claim to uphold. The Constitution does not say that the administration can create new Killils at will; it does not say that the federal administration can pick zones to shape them into a new Killil, however it may be convenient for the ruling power, or for some reason or another; it does not say you can disregard the will of the people concerned. On the contrary, it is based on the principle of self-determination. And the only people who decide whether to have their own particular Killil or have one together with another ethnicity, or other ethnicities are the people themselves. The current administration is not only violating the very foundation of the Ethiopian Constitution but it is clearly showing how utterly it despises and disregards the Southern People. I would like to know, would it do the same with the other regions of Ethiopia? Clearly not. Under the imperial regime, the paternalism of the emperor guaranteed the protection of minority ethnicities. Under the guise of socialism, the Derg declared the equality of all ethnicities. The Woyane regime had to abide by its own constitution, even if it often tweaked it to suit its needs. What we observe today is the total breakdown of law and order at every level, and the emergence of a kind of ethnofascism with far worse ignorance and cruelty.
