Ethiopian Broadcasting Corporate (EBC), state media, on Wednesday, inaugurated a new building in the capital Addis Ababa. The new facility is located in the Shegole area of the city.
Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed himself attended the ceremony. “Congratulations to the leadership and staff of Ethiopian Broadcasting Corporation (EBC),” he wrote on his social media page.
His government has been under growing criticism for attacks on freedom of expression. Vocal critics of his government, like Meskerem Abra, have been thrown into jail.
In his speech at the opening ceremony, Abiy Ahmed said ” EBC is expected to be a media that creates voices, not one that amplifies voices.”
The new facility is said to be equipped with modern media technologies. Abiy Ahmed has expressed his aspiration for EBC to be a leader in the continent.
Reaction from the public is not just indifference but rather criticism. The view is that his government has failed in the area that should have been a priority for the government – the security of citizens.
Kidnappings and killings of civilians have become rampant in the Oromo region of Ethiopia.
