Brigadier General Tefera Mamo is named as the commander of the Amhara region special force. It is Agenehu Teshager, president of the Amhara region, who made the appointment on Monday.
Amhara Media Corporation (AMC) also said that several other military officers are appointed to lead security apparatus in the region.
Brigadier General Tefera Mamo was a member of the Ethiopian Defense Force before he was thrown in jail by the TPLF leadership on alleged grounds of attempted coup on the government of the late Meles Zenawi.
After he was released from prison following Abiy Ahmed’s take over as Prime Minister, he was appointed in the Amhara region to serve in the security apparatus, but that did not last long. He was removed, and even arrested, after the president of the Amhara regional state, Ambachew Mekonen and two other senior officials, were assassinated in June 2019.
Activists on social media have been pressuring the Amhara regional state to appoint Brid. General Tefera Mamo as commander of the region’s special forces after the TPLF leaders recently unveiled plans to invade the region to retaliate what they think is an attack by Amhara forces.
