An American man running a “charitable organization” who is said to have known Abune Mathias for several years took the video says AP but it was not published.

A report published on Friday by the Associated Press claims that Patriarch of Ethiopian Orthodox Church Abune Mathias lasted “Genocide in Tigray.”
The Associated Press quoted him as saying “They want to destroy the people of Tigray.” The source claimed that Abune Mathias remarked about “Tigray genocide” in an alleged video message that was shot some time last month, but it was not published along with the report.
It is Dennis Waldley, said to run “U.S.-based Bridges of Hope Organization,” who shot the video “In an impulsive moment,” says the report by AP. And the report about the video came after he returned to the United States on Friday.
Explaining how the video message shot, Mr Waldly said, as reported by the AP, “I just pulled out my iPhone and said if you want to get the word out, let’s do it,”
“He just poured out his heart. … It’s so sad. I actually hugged him; I never did that before.” he added.
The report is not yet confirmed by Ethiopian sources.
Abune Mathias has been repeatedly making headlines in state media condemning widespread ethnic based violence in Ethiopia.
Before the start of what the Ethiopian government calls law enforcement operation in the Tigray region of Ethiopia after Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) attacked the Ethiopian Defense Force, Patriarch Abune Mathias was one part of an elders and religious fathers’ delegation sent to Tigray to lure TPLF leaders to make peace with the Federal level of government.
Ethiopian Human Rights Commission and the United Nations Human Rights Commission have signed an agreement last month to investigate the alleged human rights violations in the Tigray region of Ethiopia.

Addis Standard, Tigray Media House, etc have posted the video. What Abuna Mathias said was not new info. He spoke in general terms. Wonder why he never said the same thing during 2015 massacre at a time Tplf was still in power! Remember Tplf leader Debretsion is like a spiritual son to him! Similar to Meles to Abune Pawlos (both deceased). Bridges of Hope director Dennis Wadley is at present visiting Tigray without any restriction. He’s been “close” to Abune Pawlos and now Mathias. Interesting. Guess what? He is going to raise a hell lot of money for his organization and for his family! That is the point! In America he probably denounces Biden Admin for being socialist. In Ethiopia he sides with Marxist fugitives from justice! Mathias of course was appointed patriarch by the Tplf because he was Tigrayan. Thirty years ago he had sided with Tigray rebels to denounce Derg to later go into exile. He is repeating the same thing now! Ethiopians should be all over social media to explain what is going on to ignorant western audience!
Sad thing is that this is yet another PR victory for Tplf in the world of diplomacy! Abune Mathias in the video is heard imploring the UN or some world body to intervene. See how that fits in with Tedros Adhanom’s plea? Abiy Admin is fast slumbering. Ethiopian diplomats are on a long vacation. Or perhaps on strike (quietly working for their previous Tplf employer!).
Down with Prosperity party, full of hooligans hell bent on destroying ethiopia and inciting violence among tribes by simply putting the blame on a politcal party members who reject its genocidal approach.
The ‘Ethiopian Senod’ must meet to discuss this and perhaps choose a new Patriarch. He was ‘chosen’ to the post by TPLF, as was the previous one. The TPLF believed it had to control the Ethiopian Orthodox Church in its grand design of dividing, ruling, and plundering Ethiopia. The church is the symbol of ‘Ethiopian-ness’ and so TPLF had targeted it either for complete control but failing that destroy it.
At the personal level, I had known Abune Mathias when he served at Ethiopian Medahnialem Church in the Washington, DC area for several years, after he arrived as refugee from the Derge. He was never eloquent leader of church services; only had good voice in ‘kidase’. He could not express himself well, could not think beyond repeating the narrow church doctrine which he memorized, and did not have the qualities of leadership. At times he was even vulgar against others who crossed him. People alleged he used to be spotted wandering shopping centers in shorts during the weekend, although, but I could not vouch for that. In the end, his refusal to condemn what TPLF was doing in Ethiopia resulted in the split of the church, taking money and members with him to set up a separate one. We had to take him to court (I was members of the legal team) to settle monetary and other church related matters.
Time to remove Abune Mathias from leadership of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church!
Although I second him for making public of what are going through innocent Tigreans he should have denounced as well TPLF militants for the mayham. He never denounced. TPLF crimes that was done for the last 27 years against non Tigreans he only reacted now when the fire reached home in Tigray. The paradox is that all the illness that Ethiopia has today including the incumbent ethnic lord’s and the rulelers in Aratkillo that do not have the minimum respect for fellow human lifes to the extent have gone to have policies for extermination of what is considered others is actually a by product of TPLF and Shania themaelves. So if the Patriarch wants to blame the lion share should go to TPLF and not one else. And if abuse to civilians is being done today in Tigray who did groom and teach those who did the abuse again TPLF. who’s started the war again TPLF and no one else. Only when Tigrrans bury TPLF and stand with other fellow Ethiopians can also take on the abuses that is being done by the current rulers and rent seekers in the name of ethnicity. The Tigrean people should stand against TPLF and other ethnic based ruthless organizations and abolish the current non sense constitution to bring justice mad peace for all Ethiopians. It is the only way or total destruction and caos is guaranteed if ethnic fascists are allowed to rule the country any longer.
