It is said that the Roman Empire fell because it became weak and immoral, in a word ‘decadent’. As the late columnist Joseph Sobran once wrote, the Romans were so busy at their orgies, throwing Christians to the lions, poisoning their spouses, and eating exotic parts of animals in between visits to the vomitorium so they could eat more, that they didn’t notice all the Germans gathering on the frontiers. Then the ruthless pagan Germans rode in, trampled under their horses’ hooves the few poor debauched legionnaires who remained, still foolishly fighting on foot, sacked Rome, destroyed civilization, overthrew the last emperor in 476, and ushered in the Dark Ages.

I am tempted to make an analogy!

Dysfunctional Ethiopia: Personality cult of Abye, religious conflicts, ethnic antagonism, economic fears, corruption, patronage, intimidation, violence, unaccountability.

Ethiopia is indeed in a period of change.

But do we really know where we are heading?

And if we do, then do we really want to go there?

This administration is failing not because of lack of support from the people, but because of poor leadership, ‘softish’ dictatorship, flawed institutional design. No one is allowed or wants to take responsibility.

Which brings us to the first defector of the new Prosperity Party’s democratic centralism: Lemma Megersa, an ambitious man who was quietly moved away from his powerful position as President of Oromia, to the Ministry of Defense, and now when he felt he may be losing all semblance of real power, he jumped ship.

Sound bad? Sound like a crisis? Well, may be.

Losing Lemma may be a nuisance but not a serious impediment to Abye. He (Abye) will continue to exploit the breakdown of EPRDF’s party influence. He’ll easily grab the party power (now literally HIS party) as it suits him with more freedom than perhaps any other leader in 50 years. He will organize the 2020 election with Jawar and co, hold multiparty elections with his Pro-Capitalist Prosperity Party as a favorite to win the elections. He will ultimately sell off state-owned assets to benefit the corporate sector and ease the way for price increases to consumers. Is that democracy, or domination by US capital?

Not that we know any better than you do, Dear Readers, how parties will fare in the next election. But if you read enough, you’ll see all the calls for multiparty elections coming from Washington are accompanied by a demand for open markets. Washington believes the two go hand in hand. And Prosperity Party obliges.

Meanwhile we spend time speculating about which local or national parties will form a government, or what happens if TPLF and ORDF or GPDM unite, or where would Lemma land, or Jawar go? etc…. We do not know we’re being played by the ‘Empire’. The problem is when we wake up… we would have lost everything, to be free to do anything!

  1. Ya. But even the Empire is being swallowed by its own vomitorium which is filling up: climate change, China and debt. After Abiy opens up all markets, we will also follow the same fat but compounded by worse environment issues, huggge debt and the rise of the new absolute oligarchs. Piece by piece, we will sell whatever fertile land we have on 10000 year lease, it’s happening already. Silver lining is that what goes up must come down. Even this new order will go.

  2. Helo, Kibur I appreciate all your concern. Its real and its fact that there is luck of awareness in all matters, with no regards to sale all the opportunities of our future generations. It is sad. On the other hand to disowned the Martyrs who made it possible for this Gov change.

  3. Hi. Kabur i really wonder what fear`s you? Anyway all Ethiopians know where we are heading to with prosperity party. The ship is big enough to all just relax and wait for its arrival.

  4. I think this article should be noted as a editorial piece from the very beginning. The content of the article has very little to offer in actual facts and news “reporting”. But rather it almost entirely a opinion piece.

  5. Mr. Kebour thank you for this important piece of information. The whole idea to name the party as “Prosperity Party” is preempt its purpose. Abiy is weak and “soft dictator” with limited leadership ability. He failed to use the mass support he had gained from the majority of the population.

Without changing EPRDF personnel changing its name will not bring a better result. The only purpose is to sell of state owned assets and in the name of privatization where Ethiopians can not afford to buy or have the financial ability to purchase. Therefore is more poverty and more problem to Ethiopians!!!

Yes, Ethiopia is under turmoil at present. Usually, I am a notorious PESSIMIST when it comes to our Continent of Africa. On my part, it is a sign of anger but NOT HOPELESSNESS. If we reach that stage, we might as well officially invite the OLD COLONIALISTS to take over our LAND and our SOUL too!!! And so, deeply sad as we may be — and necessarily critical in our every endevour — WE AFRICANS should NEVER lose HOPE. I know, THEORY is much easier to toot than PRACTICAL APPLICATION. But then we can never deny our own SELVES.

By the way, due to the obvious ANCIENT HISTORICAL FACT of Ethiopia as an ancient independent African Country, Ethiopia could, should, play a role of glaring co-operative example [so to say] in our Continent.

Finally, I wish to add that the Present Leadership of Ethiopia should really be given the fare space, longevity [more than just a mere one year] and cooperation to show what he can do.

Thank you, borkena.com, for the privilege to have a free space to express my opinion.

  7. The Tigray put Ethiopia on the pass of self distraction and now Abiy is doing the same thing by using the PP to finish the job. The sad part is where were the coward Amara’s When the Tigray were dividing the country in Tribal sectors, stealing the wealth of Ethiopia to in rich themselves.
