Tigray regional state-organized a conference to rescue “constitution and Federal System”
“Ethiopia is in a difficult and challenging situation,” Debretsion Gebremichael, acting president of Tigray regional state, said when opening the conference in Mekelle, Tigray regional state.
He added that “[we] should rescue the country from a worse situation though taking a federal and constitutional path,” as reported by DW Amharic service.
It is Tigray regional state itself that put together the two-day long political conference which started on Monday, August 26, 2019. Senior Tigray regional state officials, some opposition parties in the country, and legal and constitutional scholars, among others, have attended the conference according to DW Amharic report.
“National forum to rescue the constitution and multi-national federal system” is the motto that the organizers composed as a motto.
During the opening speech, Debretsion Gebremichael also stated that the cause of the existing problems in Ethiopia is violations of the constitution and inability to ensure the rule of law.
For him, the prevalence of ethnic-based attack (he called it Identity-based attacks) is not related to the Federal system (and the Federal system is ethnic-based one). It is related to the inability of enforcing the rule of law.
Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed led Federal government is implicated in Debretison’s speech in relation to the inability to enforce the rule of law.
Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), which governs the Tigray region, has, in fact, been openly accusing the Federal government of violating the federal constitution and inability to enforce the rule of law across the country.
In an interview with The Ethiopian Reporter, a local newspaper, sometime in June of this year, Debretsion Gebremichal said that the “People of Tigray have developed sentiment for secession.” He even went further to claim that the sentiment would have been even stronger had it not been for his TPLF party.
