It is not too long ago when Ethiopia is praised as a country without journalists in prison as freedom of expression and press freedom showed a remarkable improvement from pre-Abiy Ahmed Era Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF).
But that seem to be changing fast. Citizen report on social media on Wednesday say that a journalist who works for a private newspaper, Ethiopis, was severely attacked by Addis Ababa police and was later arrested.
The journalist who is identified as Misgan Getachew was deployed to Arat Kilo area to cover stories related to demolition of houses. He was particularly tasked to get the reactions of residents whose houses were demolished in the above mentioned area.
However, he was intercepted by Addis Ababa police who dispossessed him of his photo camera, attacked him and took him to nearby police station – social media sources reported citing eyewitness accounts.
Eskinder Nega, who was a prisoner of conscience until he was released last week and who is currently spearheading a movement to defend the rights of residents of Addis Ababa owns the private newspaper for which the attacked journalists works.The story is not covered by state and affiliated media outlets by the time this story was published.

When a regime is against the truth, it cannot have a free press. Standing against the truth is standing against light, standing against light is standing against freedom of the press. EPRDF can NOT stand truth; it has always been against the truth, it will always be against the truth. Either truth will prevail or EPRDF (Darkness) will prevail! Truth and EPRDF are mutually exclusive!!! Ethiopian needs a divine intervention!! What surprises me is tyrants never ever learn from history. The PM had ample opportunity to learn from TPLF, but he seems to be determined to repeat what his predecessors have committed. The end of tyrants is disgrace!!!
I won’t shed any tears for any journalist!!!!
