Ethiopia’s ruling coalition to merge with affiliate parties, form a single national party

The ruling coalition, Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic Front, unveiled today that study on a political project to form a single national party is near completion, according to Benalf Andualem – Head of EPRDF office, as reported by Ethiopia’s state media – EBC.

Benalf spoke about it during a consultative meeting on Sunday at the office of the prime minister.

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed had attended the consultative meeting which draws with over 3000 community representatives, elders and religious leaders from Harari, Gambella, Benishangul Gumuz, Afar and Somali regions, at the office of the Prime Minister in Addis Ababa.

When the new national party is formed, smaller parties that have been operating as affiliate parties in regions like Benishangul Gumuz, Gambella, Afar and Somali regions will be a full member of the pan Ethiopian party to be introduced.

PM Abiy Ahmed told participants structural problems that have been in place for a long time cannot be resolved overnight and that there is a need to work of capacity building within institutions in a way to make them capable of supporting government’s reform activities.

As well, the prime minister sees the need to reconcile the past and the future of Ethiopia for which the culture of discussion is crucial.

The decision to form a single party was passed during the 11th EPRDF congress and the party has been working along identified direction to make formation of the party a reality, according to Benalf Andualem.

In the past, the Ethiopian Prime Minister need to be one of the four member parties of the ruling coalition. One of the major changes, if the formation of a single national party is a reality, members of region parties that rather existed an affiliate party will no longer be affiliate and leaders from any part of the country will have the opportunity to vie for higher government offices including Prime Minister.
