Former Deputy Chief of National Intelligence and Security Service (NISS), Yared Zerihun, is arrested earlier today as Ethiopian government intensifies hunting down what it calls criminals implicated in embezzlement of public resources and egregious human rights violations.
Yared was arrested in Koket hotel where he was staying in the town of Dukem, outside of the capital Addis Ababa, and he was allegedly heading to heading to Ethio-Kenyan border to cross the border to Kenya, according to state media Ethiopian Broadcasting Corporations (EBC) which cited the office of Federal Attorney General. And the suspect has appeared in court today.
Video footage released on EBC showed Yared handcuffed and being led to a security car. He was bowing his head to avoid camera.
In a related development, Security Division Head of Ethi-Telecom, state-owned Telecommunication Corporation, Colonel Gudeta Olana, is arrested.
He is facing charges of obstructing the works of the Federal Prosecutor in what seem to be an effort to cover up investigation of corruption crimes committed within military-owned conglomerate, METEC.
The number of former government officials arrested in connection with corruption and human rights violations is now well over sixty, according to reports from the office of the Federal Attorney General.
