Ethiopia appointed Tagesse Chafo today as the new Speaker of House of Representative (the Federal Parliament)- a position which was vacant just for a few days. He is a member of South Ethiopian People’s Democratic Movement (SPEDM) – one of the parties that constitutes the ruling coalition Ethiopian People Revolutionary democratic Front (EPRDF)

Tagesse served in different capacities in Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples’ Regional state. He has also served as in policy study and research institute and as minister for public service and human resources development, according to a report by the state media Ethiopian Broadcasting Corporation.

The report added that the House of Representatives unanimously elected SPEDM’s candidate for the position.

He will be replacing Muferiat Kamil (also from SPEDM), who was in the position for the past five or so months. The transition already took place. Muferiat was appointed this week as Minister of Peace – a new ministry which is said to be the most powerful position next to the prime minister as it oversees security and law enforcement apparatus in Ethiopia.
