Million Mathewos sworn in to lead Southern Nations, Nationalities and People’s Region (SNNPR)
The 7th regular congress of Southern Nations, Nationalities and People’s Region (SNNPR) appointed Million Mathewos head of the regional state, reported today Ethiopian Broadcasting Corporation.
He is replacing Dessie Dalke, who was removed as deputy chairman of the party several weeks ago. Apparently, he was implicated in the violence involving ethnic Sidamas and ethnic Wolayta’s in the region which left dozens of civilians dead and hundreds wounded. Thousands of people were also displaced as a result of the violence.
The ethnic-violence believed to be orchestrated by emblems who are discontented with the ongoing change has served as, it seems, as a catalyst for a major shakeup in the leadership.
Several weeks ago Million was elected as deputy chairman of Southern Ethiopian People’s Democratic Movement (SEPDM) when Siraj Fergessa was ‘resigned’ from the position.
Last month, the party elected Muferiat Kemil, who has been serving as speaker of house of representative since April of this year following removal of Abadula from the post, as chairman of the party replacing Shiferaw Shigute who admitted that he has some responsibility for the violence that happened in the region.
The 7th regular congress also approved other appointments to fill in vacant positions, added a report by EBC. Consequently, Elias Shikur is appointed as deputy head of the region and public service and human resources head while Wondimu Gebre is appointed as head of security and administration head.
The region has also approved 37. 9 billion birr budget (capital and operating) for 2011 Ethiopian fiscal year. It is to be financed by revenue collected from the region and federal government subsidy.
