Former Ethiopian Prime Minister Tesfaye Dinka passed away

Former Ethiopian Prime Minster Tesfaye Dinka reportedly passed away aged 77. He was among talented high ranking officials of Colonel Mengistu Hailemariam administration. In the last years of the military government, Tesfaye Dinka served as Foreign Affairs Minister and Prime Minister of Ethiopia.

He led Ethiopian delegation during western brokered London peace conference when Herman Cohen,then United States Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs, conspired to arrange take over of power in Asmara and Addis Ababa by the then guerrilla forces, EPLF and TPLF respectively, after the defeat of the military government.


In the realm of International relation, when Iraq invaded Kuwait in 1990, which triggered what became the Gulf war under George Bush Senior’s presidency,Ethiopia firmly opposed the move by Saddam Hussien’s Iraq. It was Tesfaye Dinka-as foreign minister of Ethiopia -, as seen in the video above, who appeared at the security council meeting of the United Nations to make a case for Kuwait. Citing Ethiopia’s own experience in relation to fascist Italy’s blatant aggression , he made a case that Ethiopia condemned the invasion of Kuwait and called for a collective action against Iraq.

According to information on social media, with scholarship from Imperial Government of Ethiopia, he studied at American University in Beruit and also at Syracus University in New York and has earned MSc in industrial engineering.

Tesfaye Dinka was born in Ambo, known for its Ethiopian patriotism, which is about 125 kilometers west of the capital Addis Ababa. He is survived by his wife and four children.
