Ethiopian National Movement, a coalition of four political parties, is officially launched in Maryland this afternoon. Afar People’s Party, Arbegnoch Ginbot 7, Oromo Democratic Front and Sidama People’s Movement are the parties that have officially signed agreement to work together under a singe entity : Ethiopian National Movement.
Launching meeting was attended by Ethiopians from Maryland, Washington, Virginia and other areas. Hall was full to capacity. Well over hundred thousand people watched online the four hours meeting. (Watch Video above)
Leaders of the parties that constitute the new movement made speeches to which the audience cheered. Calm, collected and commanding, Dr Konte Musa of Afar People’s Party made what many commentators on facebook say is extremely positive speech and hailed the new movement as a positive step in the right direction. He reflected on the culture and Ethiopian identity of Afar People while highlighting challenges and repressions they are living due to the policies, “investment” and otherwise, of the regime in Ethiopia.
Similarly, leaders of Oromo Democratic Front and Sidama People’s Movement expressed their optimism about Ethiopian National Movement.
Berhanu Nega, leader of Arbegnoch Ginbot 7, didn’t make it to the meeting but made an enthusiastic speech via skype.
Major Dawit Woldegirogis and Dr Getachew Begashaw are believed to be among the key figures behind the formation of Ethiopian National Movement.They worked in the project at least for about six months.
