Toronto –  Over 80 Waaqeffannaa – traditional ethnic Oromo religion- followers are reportedly arrested in Babile, East Hararghe zone of the Oromia region.

VOA Amharic , published on Friday, said it is the town’s police that arrested the followers of the religion last week. The source said that the followers of the faith were holding the second regular meeting of the faith when police arrested them.  Leaders of the traditional religion are among those arrested.

The source cited Lemma Beye, public relations, as saying that those arrested have not appeared in court.

The city administration has denied that no arrest was made in connection with religion.

Irreecha, the traditional annual Waaqeffannaa religious ritual practice, has got prominence in recent years and is celebrated in Bishoftu (Debre Zeit) and Addis Ababa. There have been criticisms that the festival is increasingly looking like a state sponsored event due to the logistical, political and administrative support from the ruling government.

Why followers the religion are arrested in Babile is unclear
