Trump Bible has arrived, Is Abiy Ahemed Bible on the way?  Time for Repentance?

By Brother Disciple

It is widely known that evangelicals, especially white evangelicals, support Donald Trump. Time has published an article titled “Why Evangelicals Went All In on Trump, Again” which provides insights into the reasons behind their support. In principle, Americans believe in the separation of church and state. As their forefathers strongly argued in the past, there should be a “wall or hedge of separation” between the secular world and the sacred church, as the mixing of the two would lead to corruption. However, time and time again, the line between the two becomes blurred in the minds of politicians and the people. Clear evidence of corruption in both the church and politics has emerged in recent years. A significant example of this is the selling of the TRUMP BIBLE, titled “God Bless the USA Bible,” to evangelicals. It took only eight years, since his presidential bid in 2016, for Mr. Trump to reach this stage. One preacher, Rev. Loran Livingston, the senior pastor of Central Church in Charlotte has come out in the open opposing this, and he calls it a  ‘Blasphemous’ and ‘Disgusting’ act. For true believers, the Bible is no go zone. It is the holy grail of everything. You cannot use it to advance your own selfish ambition. “It is idolatry,” said Rev. Loran. If you gamble using the Bible, you have managed to corrupt the whole belief system.

In the Ethiopian context, Abiy Ahmed Ali, from a Muslim background, professed as a Christian and mingled with the mainstream evangelical community long before he became the prime minister of the country. During the Derg regime and even before it, evangelicals faced enormous persecution in the country. It was only during the EPRDF-TPLF time that they managed to somehow flourish and gain freedom of religion. However, in Abiy Ahmed’s PP government, they have managed to become prominent leaders. It is worth mentioning individuals like Adanach Abebe (Addis Ababa Mayor), Shimelis Abdisa (Oromia president), Lemma Megersa (former Oromia President), Takele Omma (Former Mayor of Addis Ababa), Ambassador Birtukan Ayano (the main power person at MFA), and so on. Even the kingmaker of the PP, Abadula Gemeda, is an evangelical himself. In the name of serving and building a nation, many evangelicals have been/are supporting the prime minister. Actually, for many, it felt special to be in the corridors of power in the country where they faced a tremendous amount of persecution and humiliation, in the past. Even some claim that it is protestant time to rule the country, as the prime minister and his wife are actively participating in church life which is not bad in itself.

However, Abiy managed to unite both the mainstream conservative evangelicals and the churches infected with modern heretic teachings, led by so-called prophets and apostles who only preach the gospel of prosperity and material entitlement. Using his philosophy, known as “Medemer,” merged these two worlds under the umbrella organization called the Ethiopian Council of Gospel Believers’ Churches (ECGBC). However, this merger is problematic as it combines elements that should not have been mixed. Abiy could have left them separate. Currently, the church in Ethiopia is paralyzed when it comes to tackling false teachings and practices. Furthermore, the Council is subjected to his authority, and no one dares to correct him. According to the teachings of Jesus Christ, one can identify a true prophet, teacher, or leader by using the ultimate litmus paper found in Matthew 7:15-20. It reads as follows:

15 “Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves. 16 You will know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes from thornbushes or figs from thistles? 17 Even so, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. 18 A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit. 19 Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 20 Therefore by their fruits you will know them.

It does not say by their good words. It does not say by their good looks. It does not say by their outwardly deceptive engagements. But it does say BY THEIR FRUITS! In the past six years alone, especially the past three years of Abiy Ahmed, around 1.5 million people have died in many rounds of war, and many million people have been internally displaced unfairly. The cost of living for the majority of 125 million people has become unbearable, and the country is on the verge of disintegration, among other issues. Yet, there is no meaningful remorse and repentance among the nation’s evangelicals. On the contrary, most continue to support the war-headed leader. In fact, in a few years, we may even see the Abiy Ahmed Ali Bible in Ethiopia, similar to the Trump Bible in the USA. Some may think this is an exaggeration. However, the writer argues that if we do not engage in self-reflection and repentance, the current pattern of events in the country will lead us exactly in that direction.

“Some in the USA may even argue, ‘If there is a King James version of the Bible, why not a Trump Bible?’ Others in Ethiopia may also claim, ‘Why not the Council, ECGBC, in Ethiopia?’ This would help Evangelicals organize themselves similarly to the Orthodox Church, the Catholic Church, and the Lutheran Churches, which have historically dominated empires, kingdoms, and nations worldwide. These are not simple assertions and claims. True believers are admonished to focus on the kingdom of God, not on the kingdom of men, which is neither eternal nor perfect. The call of the church is to preach the gospel to every human being on the planet and make disciples, rather than deeply involving themselves in politics. Power has the ability to corrupt the human soul. It is time for Christians in the Evangelical world, including Ethiopians, to wake up!
