Gambella Security Tension: Renewed conflict in Itang district

Toronto – Itang district of the Gamebella region is reportedly experiencing renewed conflict. Four Kebeles of the district are impacted by the conflict. 

Wazema Radio, on Wednesday, cited sources from the region to report that the conflict is an armed one. It is between Nuer and Anuak and Nuer tribes.  It is  unspecified if there were any casualties from the latest conflict. 

Earlier this week, there was a reported assassination in Gambella city targeting a traffic police.  Tension reigned in the city and activities were restricted following the assassination. 

The Ethiopian Human Rights Commission has been reporting killings including in Gambella city due to the conflict in the region. 

Gambella Regional Government  Press Secretariat Office has not yet remarked on the reported tension. 

There has been a two-day meeting of Itag district council this week. One of the issues it discussed, according to information from the Gambella regional government, was peace and security in the region. 

The region has been experiencing recurring conflict including armed groups targeting the regional government.  In July of 2023, a curfew was introduced to the region following the attack.
