Ethiopian PM Abiy Ahmed on Friday said he held “discussions” from “community representatives” from the Tigray region of Ethiopia – a region that is reportedly facing a famine like situation due to drought and the two years war.

In a statement he shared on social media, Abiy Ahmed wrote : “Today’s discussions have been held with community representatives from Tigray who traveled from the region to the capital to address important issues. Our commitment to the stability and development of the Tigray region remains unwavering, and our engagement today further supports our shared objective.”

State-owned media did not air video footage of the discussion at this writing.

Getachew Reda, president of Tigray region interim administration, and Abraham Belay, Minister for Defense ( both are ethnic Tigreans) were seen sitting alongside Abiy Ahmed during the discussion, as seen from the picture the PM shared on social media.

The war between the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) and Abiy Ahmed’s government is said to have claimed over one million lives from the Afar, Amhara and Tigray regions of Ethiopia.

The Prime Minister held a series of discussions with “representatives” from different regions. Facing a legitimacy crisis – at least for a few years now – and currently waging a bloody war in the Amhara region of Ethiopia where hundreds of thousands of civilians are killed, his government seems to be intensifying a propaganda campaign.

Before the discussion, “representatives” who are visiting the capital will have to perform a ritual – visiting the prestige projects Abiy Ahmed’s government undertook in the capital Addis Ababa. Then the “representatives” perform a task of image building of Abiy Ahmed’s battered political persona. In the process, core issues like his government’s  inability to protect the security of citizens, and the massacre of civilians are entirely forgotten. This pattern was observed even during his “discussion” with religious leaders.

On Thursday this week, the state media released video footage from the “discussion” with Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church. The questions and stands of the Holy Synod were read out by His Grace Abune Abhram , administrator of the patriarchate. From the video footage, it looked like Archbishops who attempted to divide the Holy Synod in February 2023 sided with the Prime Minister and attacked the church. The Prime Minister himself accused the Ethiopian church of “training armies” in the monasteries in the vicinity of Addis Ababa and for failing to “implement agreement” from last year. He said he is following what is happening in the Ethiopian Orthodox churches.

Despite his abominable human rights records, he is enjoying a tacit support from western powers who seem to have a cultural agenda – among others – in Ethiopia.
