Salvador Valdes, Cuba’s Vice President visited Ethiopia this week. Ethiopia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the purpose of his visit was to “discuss multilateral cooperation and friendship between Ethiopia and Cuba.”

He met with Demeke Mekonnen, Deputy Prime Minister and  Foreign Affairs Minister, who retired from his party position as deputy president, in the capital Addis Ababa.

Impacts of unilateral sanction, multilateral international cooperation and Global South cooperation were among the topics discussed during their meeting.

From a bilateral relation perspective, cooperation in the public health, education, and sugar industry development were discussed.

In a move to strengthen relations and mutual support, Cuba and Ethiopia have reportedly agreed to hold regular bilateral consultations.

The two countries established diplomatic relations in 1976 two years after the Ethiopian Revolution. And tens of thousands of Ethiopians benefited from Cuban scholarship programs in the late 70’s and early 80’s.

When Ethiopia was invaded by Somalia in the 1970’s, Cuba provided military support and hundreds of Cuban soldiers have paid in life during the war.  A commemorial statue is erected in the Ethiopian capital near the Black Lion Hospital where the Karamara Victory – a decisive victory that reversed Somali invasion- is celebrated

Vice-President Salvador Valdes Mesa had visited Ethiopia in May 2019 – just a year after Abiy Ahmed emerged as Prime Minister from the internal wrangling of the now defunct Ethiopian Peopel’s Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF).
