ADDIS ABABA – (BORKENA) – The sports man, journalist and author, Genene Mekuria, also known as Libro, has passed away this morning.
Genene Mekuria was a prominent figure in Ethiopian sports, having served as a player, journalist, and author for many years. Genene Mekuria passed away on January 23, 2024, after receiving treatment for an illness.
Prior to his career in journalism, Genene played for several clubs, including Ethio Electric Football Club. Following his retirement from playing, Genene spent over 30 years as a sports journalist.
Genene was affectionately nicknamed “the roving library” and authored eight books on sports and other subjects including “EPRP (a political party) and Sports” in three volumes, “Libro”, and “Fair Distribution of Tej (locally brewed med)”. He also founded a weekly sports newspaper called “Libro”. Many sports fans, particularly the young people, used to read “Libro” frequently for many years. Genene hosted various programs on Zami FM, FM Addis 97.1, Bisrat FM, and other radio programs on sports, history of music and other subjects.
Genene was recognized for his outstanding contribution to football and was presented with a Long Service Medal at the CAF Congress held in Addis Ababa.
Genene is the only journalist from East Africa to win the 60-year Gondal of Merit award, which has been awarded to six journalists so far.
The journalist, Genene Mekuria, was born in March 1965 in Yirgalem and grew up in Shashemene Towns, according to available sources.
Genene’s legacy will be remembered for years to come, and he will be greatly missed by the Ethiopian sports fans.
