In an interview with Andafta Media, Kebour Ghenna, one of the few prominent economists who has been sharing his views on political economy for a long time, stated that Ethiopia is under the control of an individual. This reference is directed towards Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, implying that governance in Ethiopia is currently not based on established rules and institutions but rather on directives from the Prime Minister. What’s more concerning is that many Ethiopians have raised questions about the Prime Minister’s mental stability.
Within five years, the Nobel Peace Prize-winning Prime Minister has engaged in three devastating wars. The conflict with the TPLF, the winner of which remains unknown as highlighted by Kebour Ghenna, is reported to have claimed one million lives from three regions: Afar, Amhara, and Tigray.
Presently, Abiy Ahmed is conducting military operations in the Amhara region of Ethiopia under the pretext of “disarming fano forces.” His government declared a state of emergency in the Amhara region in early August. Hundreds of non-combatant civilians have been killed since then, not to mention rape and extrajudicial executions. The economic ramifications of the war appear to be escalating out of control. Besides exacerbating price inflation and economic hardships of the majority of Ethiopians, Ethiopia is currently in negotiations with creditors to avoid a default scenario after being unable to make a $33 million interest payment.
