Ethiopian government authorities arrested four coordinators of an anti-war peaceful demonstration on Thursday. According to the latest updates from local news sources, two additional coordinators have been detained.
The demonstration was planned to occur on December 10 in the capital, Addis Ababa, as well as in several other major towns across Ethiopia.
Reports confirm that the coordinators were apprehended in the morning in Addis Ababa and are currently being held at the Federal Police Headquarters in Mexico.
The purpose of the demonstration was to urge the Ethiopian government to end war in different parts of Ethiopia and instead engage in peaceful negotiations.
While staging a peaceful demonstration is a constitutional right in Ethiopia, requiring only notification of relevant government authorities 48 hours before the event, the authorities prohibited the December 10 demonstration citing “security concerns due to the current situation in the country.”
In an interview with Anchor Media, the organizers disclosed that they had received threats for organizing the peaceful protest and expressed that anything could happen.
The organizers had anticipated a turnout of over 100,000 anti-war protestors in the capital, Addis Ababa, alone. The organizers stated that about 80 percent of the work for the event was completed.
